Written descriptions of characters, whether in stories or as documents in their own right, often conjure different visualizations in the minds of different readers. For some people, particularly if they are not visually oriented, it may be difficult to arrive at any clear mental images. Even the author may have only a hazy or general idea of what his (or her) creations look like.
In some degree that’s the situation with the main characters of Anasazi’s Road. To help me clarify their appearance in my own mind, I’ve commissioned portraits from a variety of artists and looked at the results. Sometimes an artist suggests, through details in an image, a new idea I hadn’t considered previously. Sometimes an artist misses the mark—but even that can be useful, because it forces me to figure out why, dredging thought processes up from my subconscious into the light where I can examine them.

eura is, as with most of her work, appealingly charming. His pose, characteristically, balances self-assurance and a slight social awkwardness. The aging in his face is suitably subtle; he is about fifty but often fools observers into believing him a decade younger. In fact, the only quibble is that Eura put him in low-riders, possibly because that is what she is accustomed to seeing on her twentyish contemporaries. Overall I am quite satisfied with the result and regard it as worth far more than the vastly undervalued purchase price!

I started drawing in high school, but it never has come easily or naturally to me. That’s more true now than it used to be, and I really needed the feedback. It’s helped, and I commissioned
eura in part because her approach to hair and faces comes closer than most other artists I’ve seen to matching my hazy internal vision of the characters.
The small profile sketch is a separate work that she decided wasn’t working correctly, saying the chest and face weren’t masculine enough. To a degree she was right; he exercises regularly enough to have noticeable pecs and is beginning to show the signs of age, but he does have an ectomorphic build and refined features. He probably looked just like that ten years before the stories, though!

I like
eura’s approach to character designs, particularly heads, faces, and hair. She does a wonderful job.
You are welcome to draw Tom or the girls. I’d be delighted to see it!

Hmmm, I shall have a go at one of them, then ^^ Tom seems to be a lot of fun to draw, so I'll try my hand at that sometime. Gotta finish my dA-requests and some character-studies first, though. Reached 3K hits over at deviantART, so I launched a free-requests thingie. All five slots are already full though, so no luck for you ;)
