Somewhere on a distant rogue planet, far from any star or nebula they can be found...
Who are they? They are the forgotten shadows, they existed everywhere. One vacuum energy state later, and they were gone... Forgotten by creatures inhabiting the mortal coil of our realm. Like being a ghost of a ghost. The outside of the universe bubble. Creeping like a mold, a mold that wants to sell you something!
What do they want? They want your attention, they want your thoughts and minds, they want your being, but most importantly they want to be remembered...
Like a poltergeist in an old house, but only with the universe. Some abide all life in the new vacuum state, while others attempt to communicate. They morph into familiar shapes; like a satellite probe, or a gaping maw with eyes... They know everything we know, only spookier...
The drop of a drill with an illuminating core signals another cavern level deeper in an alien underworld to explore. Only the bravest of astro-explorers venture into these cold nitrogen-filled depths. The stupid ones are taken by the shadows, and are assumed to be taught a lesson on not flying into shadowy mouths.
Some of the shadows reach out, and grab with claws. Snatching careless explorers, and dragging their ships into the wailing mass
Some tantalize with looks, becoming voluptuous sirens of seduction, simply asking "Join us" with easily aroused explorers saying "Yes" to their demands, only for the shadows to respond with a spine chilling "You weren't supposed to say yes to that, we don't really know what to do from here..." The distant echoes of explorers answering "Let me show you"
The shadows watch more than one place, they've been reported in the deep oceans of Tempest, and on the purple winds of Dakumbra you'll feel their breath.
Whatever dangers the shadows pose, we must go deeper, and learn more about who they are/were... For reasons unknown, but mostly because it's cool. Also spooky though, many go insane trying to understand or control them.
..but like, there might be gemstones and stuff on this distant planet! Also the shadows aren't that bad... Sure they want to devour you, and your soul, but at least they mean well, they just want to be remembered is all! Even if it means using your existence to do so!

Unfortunately they are a bit incompetent, their main purpose is to make ones that gaze upon them in the mortal vacuum state go insane. That's where the more competent ones are, in the minds and ramblings of the captured. SpritTech apologizes for any confusion by the shadows relating to their Length and Width-wise conjuration, and has offered 'Depth' as an apology offering!
