A fellow artist here on FA who has a Saber toothed Tiger, or Smilodon as his "Fursona" has been helping me with a project, which inspired me to draw some cartoons featuring my old Smilodon character named "Jake." Many, Many years ago I bought a really nice hand puppet of a Saber toothed Tiger, and I worked up a routine with him, about his life in Southern California, long before people arrived. "Jake" also spoke with a pronounced and comical lisp, mainly due to those big teeth of his. I'm not certain if Humans existed in the same time as the Saber Toothed Cats, (I think we missed them by a couple million years.) but it was fun to think of the ways the Big Cats and the other pre-Ice Age critters might have lived the "California" life style so very long ago.

The latetht Thmilodon foththilth recovered from La Brea are about 13,000 yearth old; the newetht known remainth were dithcovered in Chile and are about 11,000 yearth old. Humanth lived in the La Brea area more than 16,000 yearth ago. Paleontologitht found only one human thkull in the tar; they dated her to 9,000 yearth BCE.
Yes. That pretty recent in geological time. Over the years I've been trying to come up with a reflection on how primitive Humans used to go on Saber Toothed Tiger hunts, in much the same way modern humans deal with their commutes and searches for satisfaction in fulfilling trends. "We didn't find any Saber Toothed Tigers, but hey! We got a Deer, lots of rabbits, and some of those funny little herb plants for the Shaman."
I love these!
The tar pits are really cool! I was there a long time ago. I like that if you walk around that neighborhood there's tar oozing up here and there. If you had access to property there, you could potentially collect fossils all over that area. I actually have a dire wolf fang from another tar pit near Fresno...

(Laughs.) Located just Five miles North-East and a bit more, the historic tar pits and George C. Page Museum are located in pretty much the same district in the vicinity of metropolitan Los Angeles. The intersection was made famous by Felix Figuroa and his Orchestra, and of course it reached a broader audience thanks to "Dr. Demento" who adopted the tune for his radio show of comedy and unusual music as its theme song.
