Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is a simple, but kind-hearted, man from Greenbow Alabama. Forrest leads an eventful life, no matter his less-than-average IQ. Forrest becomes a college football star, a Vietnam war hero and even starts a successful shrimping business as well as meeting several famous faces along the way from presidents to music stars. However, all through his life, Forrest's thoughts always go back to his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Robin Wright).
I haven't seen this movie in a long time. I enjoyed it the first time I saw it and I am happy to say that I enjoyed the movie during the re-watch as much as I did the first time I watched it. This is at least partly down to Tom Hanks's role as Forrest. Forrest Gump is probably my favourite Tom Hanks role, with Woody from Toy Story a close second. Readers will probably reply to this review with a Tom Hanks role that I have forgotten and I might end up correctly my decision, but I guess we shall wait and see.
Forrest doesn't get the whole movie to himself though, there are plenty of memorable supporting characters as well. Lieutenant Dan and Bubba are particular favourites. I'm not quite sure where I stand with Jenny though. I understand that she had a difficult childhood, but she drifts in and out of Forrest's life breaking the poor guy's heart over and over again. Life dealt Jenny some pretty hard cards, but she made all those bad decisions by herself.
There was one moment with Lieutenant Dan that I found particularly amusing. When Forrest tells Lieutenant Dan about his intentions of becoming a shrimp boat captain, Lieutenant Dan says that the day that Forrest becomes a shrimp boat captain is the day he becomes an astronaut. Tom Hanks and Gary Sinese would later go on to appear together in Apollo 13 in which they both played astronauts.
My rating: 4 stars.
