So I was going though my yarn stash and I found this bag of yarn I had bought last year and did nothing with. I was making hats for my etsy and thought the color was great for the brim color I was about to use...then I opened the bag. The yarn was too thin compared to the worsted weight I'm using for the hats and abandoned the idea. as I was looking at the thinness of the yarn I realized where it wasn't crochet thread, which is what you normally use for most doilies, it was still pretty thin. so I decided to try it and as it turns out, they yarn is perfect for it!
In the 30+ years of crocheting I had never made a doily before. Mom made them all the time. this one was my first (and yes it was good for me!) I'm going to have to make more of these, and maybe get my paws on some crochet thread and make some with that gauge.
Doilies are a purely decorative item, many times being used to place things like vases, or on the back of chairs to give a little flair to your décor. I don't find them to be too old fashioned, especially with the color palette available today as opposed to the color palette that was available in the past.
This project turned out to be a great skill building opportunity for me. I'll be making more of these in the future!
