Red Stovall (Clint Eastwood) is a country and western singer during the Depression. Red has an audition at the Grand Ole Opry and takes his young nephew Whit (Kyle Eastwood) along with him. Red is dying of tuberculosis, so his audition might be the last chance he gets at making a success of his singing career.
This was another departure from the usual roles I have seen Clint Eastwood in. I know Eastwood best as a tough guy cop or a mysterious gunman, but it was good to see him playing a different role and ailing singer Red Stovall was as far away from Eastwood's usual tough guy roles. It's good that I got the Clint Eastwood box set (35 Films 35 Years) from that second-hand entertainment shop as it contains several films that I wouldn't have usually seen in normal circumstances. I have yet to see a bad film in the while set. I think the only Eastwood films that I particularly disliked were Sudden Impact and Coogun's Bluff. Coogan's Bluff isn't part of the set and I have only ever seen Sudden Impact once long ago, so my opinion of that film might have changed since then.
It was also pretty weird to see Clint Eastwood singing. I'm no country and western expert, but Eastwood has a good voice on him. Or maybe I'm being naive and somebody else provided the singing voice. I haven't seen Paint Your Wagon either, so I don't know if Eastwood really does have a good singing voice on him or not.
It doesn't usually end well when actors star opposite their own kids. Remember Sylvester Stallone acting opposite his own son in Rocky V? Thankfully, Kyle Eastwood does a much better job. I know that another one of Clint's other sons, Scott, has appeared is a bunch if films, but I was curious to see if Kyle had been in anything else. There are a couple of uncredited appearances in The Outlaw Josey Wales and Bronco Billy, but nothing else that was particularly notable. What I did find more interesting was the fact that Kyle would go on to be a composer in the likes of Gran Torino and Invictus.
My rating: 3 stars.
