I'm not sure how Eski's doing the fire magic thing for the Alecani, but in several mythologies I've read about basically have fire magic being viewed as coming from either demons, destructive spirits, or even Hell itself.
So a pyromancer in a lot of cultures would be looked at and treated as if they were Hellspawn planning on burning down everything around them. A danger to be removed (either by exile or execution).
And all it takes is ONE fire user to live up to that image in a public place to have everyone fear all fire users.

This is the best thing one can do after having witnessed a friend showing off something unaccepted by the society for superstitious reasons.
Something like magic of any form, or even the friend sneaking into the bathroom and spotting something LBGT+ or medicine or similar.
