If you still have access to those chats messages, there might still be a way to get the full res versions. At least, if the chat system handles image urls the same way posts do. For tumblr posts, when you open the image in a separate tab, you get a url that looks like:
http://78.media.tumblr.com/3d881305.....mo3o1_1280.png
If you replace the beginning part with "data.tumblr.com" and replace the number at the very end with "raw", like so:
http://data.tumblr.com/3d8813052c3b.....ymo3o1_raw.png
That'll give you the picture at whatever resolution the artist originally uploaded it, before tumblr auto-resized it. You might be able to do the same thing with the images from the chat messenger.

If you can try one more time, make sure those urls start with http:// , not with https://
I've had similar issues, where my browser panics and gives me warning messages if I try to access tumblr raw images via https:// , but it can view them via http:// with no problem.
