...the following passage is an excerpt from the upcoming "Lamentations of an Icarus - Part VI"...
“C’mon, we’re almost there,” the snow leopard reassured, nearly breathless from the run. “The blast doors are around the corner!”
Tyson and Haley had to nearly scream simply to have this rushed conversation in the first place. Flashes of white light from the ceiling lit their way as they raced deeper into the sublevels of this secret installation. Trailing close behind, the raccoon didn’t feel the need to question her motive, but the young man nevertheless, felt compelled to look over his shoulder with each new step.
Tyson cried out, “What was that?! What did you call it? Was that a name?”
“Something’s wrong,” Haley replied, perplexed. It was as much a response to Tyson as it was an instance of her thinking aloud. “The door—Wilis—something’s not right. This shouldn’t be happening.”
They both knew the creature was soon to find them treading ground in the dark, but the alarm’s echoes made it nigh impossible to hear themselves let alone the sound of a third set of steps approaching from the rear. As they turned that last corner, a set of heavy blast doors outlined by bright red panels marked the end of the dimly-lit corridor. Connecting the two doors in the center was a series of concentric circular locks encircling a red owl hieroglyph emitting a portentous red light like some menacing beacon. Dismayed with what she saw, however, Haley skid to a startled halt less than ten feet from their only means of escape.
“Shit! We’re on lockdown,” the snow leopard clarified, catching her breath as she beheld the message reading ‘SEALED’ above the frame. “I thought we’d have more time before the failsafe kicked in.”
“There’s got to be a way to override it, right? I mean,” the raccoon briefly stopped to steal a single courageous glance over his shoulder, “we can’t be stuck down here, can we?”
“No, there’s a way,” she confirmed, thoroughly observing the set of heavy doors in their entirety, “but I’ll need a little time to unlock it. It’ll be around a minute, give or take, until I get this thing open.”
As she said this, Haley purposefully strode toward this sealed exit and placed both paws on the doors’ glossy, metallic exterior. A rush of warm, colorful lights leaped from each paw as she traced a complex pattern with her fingers on the shiny surface. Stepping backward, the snow leopard seemed content with the work she had done. Lively hues of red, orange and yellow weaved around her arms and wrists in rivers of vitality.
“What did you do?”
“I’m hoping to give us an advantage,” the young woman meekly answered, stepping backward to survey the swiftly evaporating pattern. “This spell should only take a minute to run its course, but it’s not much of a guarantee. I can’t say for sure if it’ll be quick, but for now, it’s really—”
“YOU!”
The raccoon and snow leopard nearly jumped in place as the sonorous tones of a deep, imposing voice boomed off the walls from the other end of the corridor like a shotgun blast.
“You’re one of them, aren’t you?!”
“Tyson, stay back!”
The snow leopard wasted no time. In her haste, Haley advanced upon the source of that resounding accusation. Standing before the young man if only to shield him, she raised both paws in preparation. The rivers of vitality then swelled beyond their banks and engulfed her paws within orbiting configurations of bright lights that bathed them both in those same warm hues. As her posture became more defensive, light began emerging from her feet to form a protective shell encasing her and Tyson alike. The creature at the other end tottered toward them at a wavering pace as if stalking prey. In the dim, intermittent light, discerning precise features proved problematic. Although, from what they saw, whomever or whatever it was had vivid red eyes which glowed in the sporadic darkness like hot coals over flame. Coming within reach of seven feet, the creature was towering in size and concealed by a mystifying mass of black feathers wrapping all around its body in a peculiar cocoon.
“I thought you were my friend, but you’re with them,” it declared, ominously unfurling a pair of sturdy black wings, “I won’t let you do it. I won’t let you take me away!”
