Vermilion was born on a planet that was in the middle of a war with the most unsuspecting enemy. Their own Moon, and they were losing badly.
The Moon had been a colony that had long pushed for independence from the planet below, and eventually war had broken out between the two. It was brutal, the lunar society unleashed hell from the heavens. The world below found itself unprepared. Cities obliterated in a continuous volley of nuclear hellfire, famine, disease, floods. Mechanized invasion forces descended to topple their remaining buildings, automated drone swarms entered shelters cities and slaughtered millions. However the people kept fighting for their survival, the surface of their home was an irradiated wreck but they still fought on, they had to, this was there home.
Even those that tried to run soon found it was impossible, colony ships waving the flags of peace were obliterated as they attempted to left. Soon enough the war reached a point where neither side even remembered how it began, just that they had to win, but for those on the planet below it seemed impossible.
It was this hellish world that Vermillion was born in. This was the world that Lazarus had arrived in during her journey through the universe. The people of the shelter cities were in awe of the fox goddess, she had brought with her many supplies and devices that allowed them to generate clean food, water and medicine for themselves. No weapons of war were gifted upon them, only items of salvation.
Then she turned her eyes to the sky above, to the Moon.
Unphazed by the lunar weaponry, Lazarus ascended to the Moon and faced with a newcomer that they could not harm the people were forced to listen to her. Soon, a temporary truce was brokered. All out war had ceased, and only the smaller battles in orbit and the surface below raged on. What she had seen in this world had made her angry, but there was still enough good at this moment that she had to try to calm the waves. She thought that maybe a more powerful third party could finally quell the fighting.
This was not at all the case. The people of the Moon became ever more stressed with her presence, and even as the peace talks went on those on the surface praised her as nothing short of a savoiur. It seemed it would work, but on the final week of the peace summit it happened again. No one was sure who fired the first shot. The lunar cities were suddenly filled with rapid fanatics, the peace summit obliterated just as the surface cities had been... The nuclear vollies continued.
Lazarus gave them one last chance. Silence and fire was the only response, and so... The fox goddess in her mortal-born anger, obliterated the Moon's military installations and core cities. She left the celestial body a dying husk like they had done to the planet, her message to the survivors was that they now had a choice... They could either work to save their worlds, or die fighting their pointless war.
However she was not completely done with them. A young child had found the goddess, tugging on the leg of her outfit, sad and alone. This child was a young red panda, and it was then that Lazarus did one final act of kindess for this world. She saved the children.
Vermilion was kept in the company of the goddess, as she grew she trained herself to be a warrior. Raised and learning in the company of another acolyte, Luminous.
