Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) are enjoying their life as newlyweds when Fiona's parents summon them home to celebrate their wedding. Naturally, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) tags along with them. Once they arrive, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews) are shocked to see that their daughter is now permanently in her ogre form. Fiona's choice of husband isn't helping matters either. They try to accept it the best they can, but long ago Harold made a deal with the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) promising that her son, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), would marry Fiona. With patience wearing thin, Harold hires hitman Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to take care of Shrek.
I never particularly cared for the first Shrek film. As a matter of fact, I think the first Shrek is my least favourite of the whole series. Yes, I even like Shrek the Third more than the first. I loved the whole subplot of Fiona leading all the other fairy tale princesses in a revolt against Prince Charming. The only part of the first film I remember particularly well was the scene where Fiona beat up Robin Hood and his men. Everything else was pretty forgettable. Thankfully, this film is my favourite of the whole series. This is mostly down to the introduction of Puss in Boots, the best character in the whole series. Who could possibly argue with those cute little eyes? There's a reason why Puss got his own spin-off movie as well.
The other new characters were a lot of fun as well. I liked the king and queen, but the Fairy Godmother was the one that stood out for me. I am a sucker for a hammy villain and Jennifer Saunders didn't disappoint. I loved her rendition of Holding Out For a Hero too. The whole scene is incredibly awesome. You have Shrek's assault on the castle standing atop a giant gingerbread man, then Puss in Boots repaying his debt to Shrek by distracting a bunch of guards and doing his adorable little kitten face. Now that I mention it, anything that Puss does is bound to be an awesome moment. I certainly like him much more than Donkey.
The voice cast are pretty decent throughout. At the risk of repeating myself, I have to say that Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Saunders are the stand outs for me. Antonio Banderas is usually excellent in everything is in. I have to confess that I never really got into Absolutely Fabulous, but Jennifer Saunders has always been a lot of fun when I have seen her appear on panels shows or as a guest on chat shows.
Shrek Forever After and Puss in Boots are the only other films in the series that are on my watch list, but I suppose I can watch the others if there is a high enough demand. Just don't expect me to say anything interesting about the first one.
My rating: 3.5 stars.
