Well, in-character, Sonic wouldn't of known how it happened. I'd say its a flaw in the tech used to blow them up, since it requires anatomical alterations. My best bet, since it's a fapping comic and not meant to be thought of too heavily, is that Sonic doesn't understand why he survived. So it's only natural it's unknown until that point.
