...just to give you an idea what a TWELVE FOOT wingspan looks like in real life, with a 5' 6' trainer beside him for scale... :D She's got a bit of meat in her paw and he's happily rooting for it, the cutie.

Yay! This fellow just got grin after grin from me... So many people equate the various vulture-species with disgusting things to the point where we even use it as a word of insult, when these birds are both necessary to their eco-systems and are BEAUTIFUL, at least, to my eyes. You find them wherever there are large animals in big enough numbers that a dead and decaying one poses a problem as a potential disease-vector- thus, the scavenger extraordinaire: the vulture. And, for some reason, I just love the idea of getting friendly with this guy and seeing if he likes hugs... Yah, I'm weird.
You live in the Andes Mountains? O___o That's where this Condor is from. But if you're in some of the Southwestern states, what you've likely been seeing are Turkey Vultures, who are pretty cool-looking birds, too... when you can get one close enough. They're pretty shy. If I had a large property, and a bird who felt that area was his territory, I'd love to have one living with me, too. I'd never want to clip his wings, so if he flew away, I'd have to live with that.
*giggle* Indeed! I guess the trainer holds the meat like that because the bird's normal behaviour of digging into a carcass would be more comfortable for him? I do wonder how playful he gets, though- he seemed like a bit of a joker during the show, strutting around with his wings half-spread, pausing to mug for the audience the way he did. It didn't look entirely scripted.
Don't I know it! I've actually held what could be conversations with the local ravens. They'd caw or chuckle and I'd make a similar noise. They'd pause to look me over, sometimes coming a little closer and chuckle back at me. We'd go for a couple of rounds before he decided that I really didn't have anything to say that mattered to him and he'd go back to whatever he was doing. *chuckle* I loved watching the ones that have taken to staying year-round back in Winnipeg. There's always a few who decide to over-winter, and this one had caches of food all over the place. i saw him looking for one in a church's eaves-trough, and he was getting frustrated, because he KNEW his food was there, but he just couldn't get at it. He'd stop, flap a little and grumble bitchy raven noises, root around again, flutter a little more, getting louder, and repeating the process until he finally had a full out shouting-match with himself over not finding his stuff. He eventually turned it up, though, and his calls were much happier sounding as he flew off with his prize.
Gave me the best laugh I'd had all that week, that Raven did. I'd see him around afterward- I was pretty sure it was the same bird, anyway, not many Ravens back home- and he was just as inquisitive, snarky and jealous of his stuff as ever. I'd call out to him a hello every now and then.
:3
Ravens need love too.
I have a cat around the house that does almost the same thing. She LOVES to talk (I hate it when she does). Anyway the other day I just went "meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow" back at her and she sorta looked at me and walked away.

Awww, never pegged you for a cat-hater! >O___________O< I'll keep my Diva away from ya, then. Heh. She's a demanding little thing and she'd probably charm you anyway. She likes to steal my chair, too, whenever I get up to do anything, though, she chases after me like whatever I'm doing has GOT to be the most fascinating thing! Hopes I'll feed her, or something, I guess.
Awww... She's elderly! Um, a suggestion from a old cat owner: if she's peeing in places other than her litter box, that could be pointing to a health-issue. Does she ever seem to be straining to do her business? Or she just could be going senile- it happens. Maybe she's just getting incontinent, and had the urge too strongly and couldn't get to the litter.
And I was joking about the "UR so mean" thing- that's why I wrote the way I did. I don't usually use that writing style.

*giggles* I left Buggz and Squee back in Winnipeg, but they didn't mind being held like that, either- I just never did it. But my former roomie has a little boy who 'd hold them like that, and they relax and purr. Diva is a squirmy sort that hates to be held for more than a few seconds- she prefers to sit beside you, or on your lap, if there's room.
Our squirmy kitty is supposed to be the barn cat, but doesn't really do his job. :P
He mooches off the indoor food and is almost as big as The Pudge (who is a 16 pound blob who loves to lay places--his only requirement is that if he's ona shoulder, he's on your left shoulder).
He does like to be petted and scritched though. Mostly just his head (he'll arch and squirm around to make that obvious).

The Pudge... *giggles* He sounds awesome... I had an orange blob cat I called Putza. He was missing a tail, was usually covered in scratches from fights, his nose was dotted with age-spots and he ADORED the smell of toothpaste. Whenever I brushed my teeth, he was up onto the bathroom counter wanting to give me a kiss. He'd try to take my hair-brush, too- if I combed my hair, he would literally shove his way under my hand to tell me to brush him, too! He was hilarious. Gods, I miss him, old sod. He passed away a couple of years ago.
Yeah, he really was, the poor mite. I sincerely hope he was able to breed before losing his nads to the accident that took his tail... I still half expect his big orange blob body to come sauntering in so he can jump up and sit on my book or art when I'm doing stuff. He'd do that, then start grooming. I go "Ahem?" and he'd look up at me with his tongue sticking out as if to say "whut?" If he wanted attention, he'd paw at my book, pulling it down so I could see his fuzzy face, or he'd stand on his hind legs to pat me on the knee... He wasn't a yowler, either- very quiet- used polite gestures when he wanted something.
Hehe. Grumpy (my fuzzy Beau) sorta does that. He's our noisiest cat, but if he wants something, he gets up on your lap and asks for pettings (when what he really wants is usually food--he's also the only cat that isn't overweight (well, and Miss Kitty, who's severely underweight)).
Diva (the lady who still lives with me) is still trim, even at ten years old. But Putza started putting on the ounces after his accident and surgery. The other two fuzzballs back in Winnipeg were still trim and muscular, last I'd heard- they were outdoor cats who loved to climb, hunt and fight with other felines, so they got lots of activity.
Pudge doesn't really go outside, at least not much more than to look around and come back in.
Twit--the other bulbous pussy cat--is the theoretical Barn Cat, who absolutely loves being outside, he pretty much only comes inside to eat and occasionally sleep.
Beau goes in and out a lot and knows how much he should be eating as to not plump up.
Miss Kitty has a hyperactive thyroid and doesn't eat much (she's around 16 years old; as one vet put it, "she's somewhere between 7 and dead").

Due to her habit of not using the litter box we locked her in the 3rd floor bathroom so she had all the necessities. About a week ago mom couldn't get one of the doors to close, so she left it open. A week later, the door is still open and Miss Kitty hasn't figured it out yet.
Is that a female condor?
I've seen many of them (flying and in zoos). In Zoos they hadrly show their wingspan..And their aren't made for zoos (like dolphins in aquariums or water parks). At least this kind of animals need a LOT of space, is just like we lived on a small prison and we weren't able to walk. The ones I saw in the wild are to high for me to appreciate them. My parents saw them near the top of a mountain (in Argentina) flying close to them. I went there (it's not hard to get at all) but I didn't see them -__- The only way I could see their wings wide open was in the museum.
Nice picture

Hiya! Thanks for liking this pic! I'm fairly certain this fellow is a male Andean Condor, but I could be wrong. Yeah, it's really hard to get a good look at these birds. They're not only rather shy, from what I hear, they're also very rare. I'm not sure what kind of enclosure this Condor has at the San Diego Animal Park, but he seemed pretty happy, playing around and being a goof for the audience. I did see that the enclosures for the animals were large, clean, very natural looking and a good distance away from annoying humans- we could see them well and not really bother them, either.
It's pretty awesome to be this close to a flying bird this large, isn't it? I felt honoured, anyway- he was beautiful.

Yeah, I don't know if her down feathers would work very well, and it would take forever to collect them all. Her larger feathers would have to go on a really ginormous dream-catcher, though! Her primaries alone are almost two feet long (that's those long feathers on the far point of her wings)!
