*giggles* So there was this guy in a chef's hat at the the station for one of the tours at the San Diego Animal Park, and he was carrying a plate of fried crickets and meal-worms and offering them to people while they waited for their turn at the trolly...
I actually went back for seconds, 'cuz Kani missed the chance to take a photo of me when I ate the cricket.
Yes, that is a meal-worm on my tongue.
LOL

Yay! How's this for an odd coincidence: I walked past my kiln the other day and smacked my foot against the bricks we have keeping it off the floor, and did something to bone along the top of my foot. Ouchie. But I think it's just bruised, as the pain is fading, only slowly. Kani's moved it toward the wall so now I don't have to keep cracking my toes on it.
*huggles* And if I've lost weight, it's only maybe ten pounds, but it's creeping off, which is good.

Yup- they used a BBQ flavouring on them. Reminded me of sunflower seeds a little bit.
Thanks for liking my ears.. erm. *chuckles* I've been working my way up to a one inch gauge, but I seem to be stuck at just under 3/8" right now. I have some sweet plugs I want to wear, but my holes aren't quite large enough. Actually, those piercings are the one pair I did myself.

Ahh thats cool I've seen some good plugs and such at http://onetribe.nu/index.php they go from like 20 to 3 1/4" :P
Willing and actually interested. And it was a laugh to see the reaction of the other people in line when they realized I went for seconds! *giggles* I've eaten various insects before: most notably, chocolate bees, and these big suckers I have with crickets in them that I bought for a giggle.
Oddly enough, you can find mealworms at some pet-stores that specialize in amphibians, snakes and lizards. They're a common food for them. But I don't know if those are sterile and clean or not. Mind you, frying 'em will likely fix that problem. And the bees were pretty tasteless and crunchy- I mostly tasted chocolate.
Well, sauteing is probably best for them if you want to keep their juices, such as they are. They're a pretty dry-seeming food. There's a dish from Vietnam that use big grubs in a stir-fry. You don't have to use oil or grease to fry things, you know. Water works, as does any light sauce like soy or teriyaki, tamari, etc. Or just use one of those sprays like Pam, but I personally don't like them.
Ah, darn curiosity, haha. That's mainly the reason I tried Sushi, and I dislike fish! But I can't stand Wasabi, cause my friend told me it was mild, and it made me throw up! But that's probably cause I used a lot. Ginger is good though. I've always like ginger. And yeah, I guess I could eat them, but... I would be hesitant. Curiosity makes us do stupid stuff sometimes, but we never regret it, huh? Haha.
I love sushi, actually, and wasabi, but you are only supposed to use a very tiny amount. it's super strong, as you found out. It's to contrast the other flavours, and you only need the tiniest of dabs, like say a blob the size of a big pin-head smeared on your rice. I'd cringe if the bugs were still alive and squirming- I like my food decently DEAD, thank you. Deceased and cooked- no problem.
Oh, I prefer my meat to be as raw as possible, but that's only for beef, venison, and various kinds of fish or shell-fish. Any other meat raw just doesn't taste right. *shudders* I get the churn-gurglies when I try to eat cottage-cheese. Just can't keep the stuff down. I love Ricotta, though, which is a similar kind of cheese, so I dunno what's with that.
Well, the sad and ironic thing is, I like the taste of cottage cheese, but I had an experience with it one time where I'd eaten far too much of it at once, and ended up hurling it all over the steps outside. Ugh. Haven't been able to touch the stuff since, unless it's a very small amount, sweetened with a lot of fruit. I'm certainly willing to try it again, of course! I can't understand it when people overcook beef- it gets so dry and tasteless. Bleagh. I do prefer my chicken to be well-done, though. Pork, a hint of pink, so I know it's not dried out, and fish, if I cook it, gets broiled in a sealed container so it steams itself nicely. Unless it's a fatty fish like salmon, then it's broil/steam then broil it open so the skin crisps a little. Delicious!
Dammit, now I'm craving fire-roasted salmon steaks.
Damn you.
*chuckle*

*giggle* It's all food for something- it's just a cultural bias North Americans have against eating insects and grubs. We've been conditioned to believe bugs are dirty and disgusting, when most of the planet sees many species as nutritious and tasty additions of much-needed protein to their diets.
Well, since these had been fried, they actually didn't have a lot of flavour. Most of what taste there was came from the BBQ spice on it. I imagine they would have more substance if they'd been cooked in a different way, such as stir-frying them, or steaming, the way most cultures do it, so they didn't lose so much of their juices and "body". Also, the grubs used in various dishes around the world are actually much larger than meal-worms- think of something that's about four inches long and at least an inch or more round. About the size of a large shrimp.
