The Great Unfinished Collection IV
UPDATE -- Finished pictures from this collection: (Numbered from left to right, then top to bottom)
#02 -- Skyra - The Cliff
#04 -- (Still unfinished but teaser posted in Scraps...)
#07 -- Carlos - Prairie Shower
So I'm getting people asking me if I'm dead again.
If anyone's lost track, my last picture was uploaded... *counts fingers*... nearly nine months ago. I mean, it was a good one, judging by the enormous reaction it got. But it was quite a while ago now. And I probably freaked the crap out of a number of you when I mentioned in the description that it could potentially be "the last picture I ever do".
Time, then, for another of these stupid teases. Yes, welcome to Volume IV (that's four) of The Great Unfinished Collection. (I really should stop doing these.)
For anyone who hasn't previously cast eyes on Volume I, Volume II and Volume III of this ridiculous series (which if you haven't, just click the link for the relevant volume), this is another one of those jumbled up collages showing a tiny snippet of some grand project that I've started and still haven't gotten round to finishing. And given that there still images in Volume I that I've never finished, I wouldn't hold your breath either...
The sneaky squares you see before you are from various projects that I've had imprisoned in the 'work-in-progress' locker and occasionally thrown a morsel of food in recent times. The newest was one I think I only started in about April this year. The oldest, I'm guessing, was started in at least late 2015. (Yes. Twenty Fifteen. Because that's just how crap I am at this.) Some of them look more finished than they actually are - what you're seeing in some cases is a coloured test of a sketch that isn't finished, or a rough shading experiment on something that I haven't actually finished drawing yet. But all of them are still in progress to some degree.
Now I should stress that I meant what I said in my last proper submission. I have grown ever more distant from the fandom (as I'm sure a lot of you have noticed by now, if you're still bothering to watch me), and this is further evidence of just how much of a struggle I find it to get artwork actually finished.
A lot of that will rely on me getting my life sorted. I'm still out of work - have been now for quite some time - and have had a number of other family issues that have thrown me out of whack. Truth be told, and I'm not someone who likes to bleat about this crap, I think I've probably been depressed for quite some time. And I've hidden a certain amount of dissatisfaction with my life by escaping into drawing furry smut, which I don't believe is particularly healthy for me. At some point, it may well be best if I genuinely do stop it altogether - but for better or worse, I haven't yet been able to pull myself out of it.
To end the rambling, the point is this: I may never finish any of these. Or I might finish all of them. Who the hell knows. But I just wanted to assure anyone who wants to know that I'm still around, still dabbling in art when I can be arsed, and sooner or later, you might actually just see something new from me.
(Maybe.)

Yes. I'm already considering it. Because I am getting fed up of the sheer quantity of unfinished stuff I have lying around.
I actually just did a rough count of the outstanding pictures in the previous volumes of this collection, and combined with this one, there are now 23 projects shown within the four volumes that I have yet to finish. And frankly, I know there are a bunch of those now that I have pretty much zero intention of ever completing. They're going back, like, nine years!!

By the way, when you say most of these are 'at least at flat colour stage', I'm afraid that's not quite true. To be honest, there's only three of these that I would actually say are at that stage. The others are more like colour and shading tests on what are actually still unfinished drawings that I'm not quite happy with. So they've not progressed quite as far as you might think.
Oohh, I see! My mistake. I'm too used to add colors only after lineart is complete myself to have considered that possibility xD
And well, I totally understand you for the "zero intention of ever completing" part! Especially since after 9 years, you probably are not enjoying looking at them anymore nor are they up to your own standards after 9 years of progress haha x) But hey, I personally am sure people will still enjoy looking at your work no matter how old :D

Be « dead » if you want ! I mean, being offline is sometimes better for artist like you, we should now and understand you’re not « dead » and surely making a draw for us ! People who calling you dead are just impatient asshole ! Just ignore them, take your time, you said it dude : « better late than never » ! I’m hyped too to see your next draw BUUUUUT I will patiently wait for it ;)
Honestly, dear mister rexar! you are welcome to upload your unfinished art to the scraps folder!
We, your loyal fans, are always happy when you show us some of your art. even if it is not as perfect as you would have liked to show us.
Please upload unfinished pictures and let us participate in your progress, or standstill of the pictures, instead of uploading nothing :)

I know how you feel. If I were you, then I would like to show the people good and finished pictures. but as you have realized yourself, you can not always do that, and that makes you sad.
We, your fans, are always happy when you contact us. and before you go to so much trouble with pictures that are never finished and dig into a sketchbook, then just show us. Everyone loves sketches of his favorite artists!
Even at games, the developers for fans upload their sketches and ideas, even if they were never implemented. but knowing how it would be is interesting!
and you have already uploaded some sketches. for example those of wargreymon, rocky, the horse, bubba ect. I prefer to see such sketches, as nothing of you.
we love you, bug guy :)

Hey Rex! It's good to see that you're not among the numbers of people who have left for the gates of heaven. I wish you the best of luck with the rubbish life tends to dish out and I am very sorry that you feel that depression sinking deeper into you.
I have been watching your art for a very long time (I don't remember when you uploaded the mouse mash animation but that was the first upload I remember seeing from you.)
I remember staying super shy in eccentricities and watching your art pop up in the forums and I'd stare at poor Mike thinking "i hate that fucking dog. He looks so ungrateful about his position with Rocky and Rexar. I'd beg to be trapped under their feet, not beg to be let go."
Then you uploaded workout partners. Well i was a little more mean with my jealousy. I thought "that fucking dog needs to be tied? I'd crawl into Rocky's shoe and beg him to keep me there all day. What an ungrateful beta"
Heh. Hold tight and think about yourself. You have given us many wonderful memories with just art alone and its time you look after yourself. Your fans will always be here for you.
You are truely an amazing artist and a wonderful person.

Blimey, I never knew anybody felt so annoyed with Mike!!
Mind you, it's very much to convey the forced element. The whole reason I draw these scenarios is because I like them, and as Mike is my fursona, technically he should like them too. But sometimes I prefer to draw him being unhappy about it as it emphasises the forceful domination of the situation.
Thanks, by the way!

So, let me see if I guess correctly the ones in the panels
1st: Knuckles
2nd: Skyra
3rd: Tebe
4th: Timon
5th: I don't know ^^
6th: An avian. Maybe a chicken?
7th: Marco or Carlos
8th: Iago
9th: Seb
I hope to have guessed already some of them ^^
Anyway, it's a pity to see other pics unfinished. I'm sure that they would look great if completed ^^

This is kinda sad tbh, considering you're, in my opinion, somewhat of a legend, but it's good to know you're not literally deceased. Hopefully we'll see some of these in some sort of full form (finished or otherwise) at some point, it would be a shame for then to be lost to time.
its a shame your growing distant from the fandom and thus getting fewer and fewer submissions in peoples inboxes including mine considering ive enjoyed your work when something comes out in my inbox of submissions, all the while i'm growing distant myself from the fandom too just like you for reasons left untold. I'm sorry to hear your situation i know what its like to be unemployed for nearly a year (I mean i got a job now since last February but it was so frustrating to be rejected by jobs after being laid off because the store i worked at before looking for a new job closed down via liquidation). Wasn't the happiest camper to be quite honest, was in your same department with family issues and crap the whole 9 yards. but anyways hope you find a job soon that will get your life back on track and trust me there's always some job that requires someones ass to be filled after they fire someone from some department or another so new opportunities are rising every here and there. anyways hopefully you can finish these when you do if you dont its understandable due to such difficulties in life as life comes first but hopefully it doesn't hit you too hard.
Whatever you decide to do, just be healthy, be smart, and take care of yourself and your family. Those things come first. We'll be here for you for when (if) you're able to join us.
Also, I don't personally put any weight on the need to finish personal artwork. I draw to get ideas out of my head and into something I can see; once it's there, the drive fades quick and I move onto the next. Granted, like you, if it's not finished, I generally don't want to show it, but I'm very happy to see what you've got in progress. :3

Heh, well this is quite a surprise. I was expecting you to submit another unfinished collection last year since you’ve been uploading these every two years until last year. But last year I learned that you were doubling back from the fandom more so. But now that you’ve uploaded this I’m glad to see that you’re still working on some art at least. Of course I’m not holding my breath, I know the drill. When you did say that the 10th anniversary picture might be your last one, I kinda figured that it was the last one in a long time. I did believe you when you said that it would be the last majorly detailed project you ever create and I don’t blame you I suppose. I imagine there should be some shortcuts to make a detailed picture like that but I don’t know much about digital painting or advanced techniques that come with it... yet.
Now for me to guess these characters in this collection which I always enjoy doing.
1. Knuckles
2. Skyra
3. Mike (That may be an another Snapshot with Rexar. Or this could be a one-off of him interacting with… a bear?)
4. Timon
5. I don’t know - this one’s too generic and hard to guess. (A slightly modified ninja turtle? It could be a certain dreamworks character but I refuse to think you have that shit of a taste. I know it's not king koopa or one-eyed mike.)
6. Henery Hawk (Otherwise it looks too generic to guess.)
7. Marco (That snout is a dead giveaway.)
8. Iago (Modified a bit?)
9. Seb
Well that’s all the effort that I can be bothered to put into guessing these - heh. These all look good, but I’m looking forward to whatever you have in store in the future. Although, I must admit, I’m still waiting on some pieces you’ve teased in some of your past collections.
I’m still waiting for #9 of 1, #5 of 2, #2 & #4 of 3, and I guess #1 of 4. What can I say, those hit my buttons quite a bit - assuming they involve the fetish that they imply. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up not ever finishing any of them. And honestly, I don’t blame if you just can’t finish them and do decide to eventually abandon those projects due to lack of enthusiasm, real life priorities, personal issues or for whatever reason. I’m familiar with that problem myself as an artist.
I’m well aware that you’ve been withdrawing from the fandom since 2015 when you were slowly doing it then, starting with you stepping down from the Eccentricities team 3 years ago. I actually remember you talking about this on a thread on Eccentricities towards the end of that year too. You were saying something about not being certain when you’ll ever finish your pictures and I quipped something along the lines of, “In other words, never!” And then your replied to me that “I might as well be right about that” or something like that. But I wasn’t expecting you to distance yourself from the fandom more and more since then. Again, I don’t blame you.
Furthermore, I had no idea that you were out of work for some time now. I remember you saying that you got hired for a journalism job but I know that was over 5 years ago, and I do acknowledge that a lot can change for anyone in that timeframe. And I understand where you’re coming when you say that you’re getting your life sorted out and that you’ve been depressed for quite some time now, trust me I do. I know that feeling of not being on the payroll and being down for that reason and/or other reasons that relate to my personal life, my career, etc. I know this because I’m in a similar situation currently. Years ago, I think I was in a worse spot as I didn’t know what career I liked and that might bring me joy working in. Now, I’m trying my best to stay positive, but most importantly, on planning how to gain happiness in the career I’m now pursuing. And I have a positive feeling things will work out for me soon enough. But I'm sorry that you're going through hard times man.
Judging by what you’ve said in your last few updates, it looks like you’re at a crossroads. I think you’re either going to spend, at most, another good 3 somewhat quiet years in the fandom and then leave for good to pursue other goals or just stick to the fandom with your few and far between uploads every year while pursuing your goals. I can only suggest that you try to stay positive and not give up. Also - and sorry for being vague when I say this - I recommend that you do what you need to do but keep your chin up. I’m assume that you already know what you need to do. And if you do decide to leave the fandom permanently, then I won’t blame you but I will support you. Anyway, sorry for another long comment - heh. I’m looking forward to whatever you bring to this community.
I also hope you're having a good summer! Take care RRRex!
P.S. Did England losing the World Cup semi-finals last month contribute to your depression at all? They played a good match but I have to give it to Croatia for a great performance during that tense overtime. I didn't like how the media downplayed Croatia's potential when they pushed for a England vs. France finale and how they already assumed who was going to win that semi-final. I was rooting for Croatia in the end. Of course this is coming from a guy who rarely watches soccer... or football - heh!

Hey Draeckeeon! Phew, another lengthy reply...!
From your guesses, I'll tell you you've got five right. Won't say any more.
I wouldn't hold your breath on a lot of the older Great Unfinished Collection panels. I'll probably end up uploading some of them as abandoned projects because I know full well a lot of them are never gonna happen now.
Thanks for the support anyway. Still out of work at the moment so still not found the solution to my problems as yet. Good luck on your career plans anyway!
And no, don't worry - football can annoy me but it doesn't contribute to depression for me. The important things get me down. Sport is just trivial. (Thankfully!)

I assure you, this will be the last lengthy reply you get from me... at least under this username.
Ah shoot, I only got five right? I was sure I would at least hit six!
That's truly a shame that you will most likely abandon most of your older projects. I was looking forward to seeing some of them.
In that case, do you know when you'll upload your next batch of abandoned projects? How many?
You're welcome for the moral support. I do hope that things get better for you and that you find the solution to your shortcomings, if you haven't already that is!
