Dory is now living alongside Marlin and Nemo. Dory gradually begins to remember details about her past life, including the fact that she was once separated from her parents. Marlin and Nemo both accompany Dory on her quest to find her parents. The journey eventually takes Dory and her friends to the Marine Life Institute, but she soon gets separated and must find her way on her own. Dory soon meets Hank, a cranky septopus (an octopus that is missing a tentacle) who dreams of spending his life alone in an aquarium in Cleveland. Together they navigate the Institute and try to find Dory's parents.
Finding Nemo was one of the best films Pixar ever made, so you could understand why some people were wary about a sequel coming out so long after the original (13 years after the original to be exact), but they needn't have worried as Finding Dory was just as good as Finding Nemo. It is probably helped that this film is all about Dory, everybody's favourite character from the first film. A lot of people seemed to like Hank the septopus, so it makes you wonder if he will end up getting his own spin-off film. Personally, I really liked Destiny the nearsighted whale shark and would really like to see more of her.
In the first film Dory's memory problems were usually played for laughs, but here they are taken more seriously. We find out that Dory had a poor memory ever since she was a baby and she had even forgotten about her parents. Baby Dory is so adorable that you would have to be a cold-hearted soul not to fall in love with her right away. Her parents seemed really nice as well.
It was rather disappointing that not all of the characters from the first film returned for this one. Those characters that did return didn't appear for long, like the surfer dude turtle Crush. He only appeared in one scene. The sharks and Nigel the pelican didn't even appear once. Maybe the filmmakers are saving them for a third film, if that does ever come about. I hope we do get to see more of Nigel because he was another favourite of mine from the first film.
My rating: 4 stars.
