Atriean Relationships Addendum One: Atriean Morning Sickness
‘Atriean morning sickness’ has been thrown around a few times in Frontier and ItSotV, and in one of the upcoming paralogues. Sure if you pay close attention you can figure out everything you need to know, but I like explaining things so I’m going to.
Atriean morning sickness, often referred to as an ‘episode’ or ‘hormonal episode’, is a physiological response to the buildup of certain hormones in the bloodstream. During pregnancy, the hormonal glands of the body understandably kick into overdrive, preparing the body for the cub in every way. The presents a problem, however. The body cannot deal with these hormones quickly enough, so a buildup of them will slowly occur. Once these hormones reach critical levels, some of them bind to receptors in the brain and trigger a hormonal episode. This episode will cause the woman to feel weak at the knees and a loss of concentration, as well as an intense desire to seek close physical contact with their mate. If he is around and this contact is achieved, pores in the skin will allow the secretion of much of the extra hormones into the male’s body, who will then be able to break them down. If however the mate is not around, and the episode passes without relief, it is still necessary to be rid of the extra hormones. The secondary method of doing this is not very comfortable and in short, results in disposing of the hormones through the urinary tract.
Note: The close contact that occurs during a hormonal episode is non sexual in nature. I mean, if it were that makes no sense from an evolutionary standpoint.
