Nah! It's just habit! You cultivate your artistic habit over time, and that becomes style.
This was a quick scribble and color, but I will try to break it down:
LiNE
I started out wanting to draw it shittily. I was gonna do some mock forced perspective and scribble in details of a fictionalized version of my studio. I was feeling fat, so I made my beagle shapely and lazy-looking in posture. Basically, he looks like he's laying down. Without looking, i noticed I tend to cross my legs when I draw so that was sorta guessed at. Then it was merely a case of balancing negative space with active space. I was happy with the cacophony
COLOR
When I color, I first stick with what I have at hand. I have ink filled brush pens and markers. I really liked this red I refilled and this ochre, so I started with those -- smearing the ink I just drew and intimating light. I knew I'd balance those warm hues with darker ones (The teal and blue), but I also added magenta because I fucking add magenta to everything. I painted some light grayish blue on the dog. It was a very loud piece.
PHOTOSHOP
I put a layer of teal over everything and erased what I imagined would be light. Sloppily. I added circle motifs for light sources. Before all that, forgot to mention, I pumped out my blacks, made the yellows truly yellow by removing some magenta and all cyan. I then proceeded to punch out the colors I liked the most and did a little balancing.
Really it all boils down to balance. I know if I invoke magenta, I should also invoke green somehow (sometimes it's just with blue and yellow in close proximity). I don't often stick with a really tidy swatch. I tend to invoke complements a lot. The black and white part is a little less conscious, but even that has a rhyme and a reason. You make your lines lead the eye. Outlines shape the world and lead you away from it and back into it. It should vibrate.
It's not genius. It's just a habit. But thank you for the kindness!
