Pompe Stevens was a slave who worked for the Stevens' family's gravestone carving shop. As explicitly stated on the stone, Cuffe was his brother. He ultimately bought his freedom, changed his name to Zingo, and became a founding member of Newport's Free African Union Society. His first wife, Phillis, is buried further to the left of this stone.
