Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) plans to retire from boxing with his wife Adrian (Talia Shire). However, Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) is taking the sport by storm and Rocky's old rival Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) wants a shot at him. The bout goes horribly wrong for Apollo and Drago beats him so badly that he dies in Rocky's arms. Feeling guilty for his friend's death, Rocky vows to beat Drago himself and travels to Russia to train.
My intention was to review the Rocky movies in order (maybe not Rocky V though), but the request was for this one specifically. I don't suppose I can complain though, I really like Rocky IV. The first movie was a pretty serious drama that just happened to have boxing in it, but this movie is so wonderfully cheesy and Rocky wins the Cold War single-handedly. It seems like Stallone's characters had a habit of defeating the might of the Soviets all on their lonesome. Rambo did it at least twice.
Adrian doesn't think that Rocky can beat Drago so she stays behind while he heads off to Russia to train. It takes her the duration of a training montage for her to change her mind. Then we get another training montage to celebrate. I liked the comparisons between the different ways Rocky and Drago train. Drago uses Soviet super-science while Rocky trains using good old-fashioned American hard work.
Bill Conti couldn't return to compose the music for this movie as he was busy with The Karate Kid. Instead we have Vince DiCola as the composer. DiCola would later go on to compose the music for the only Transformer movie worth watching (1986's The Transformers: The Movie), which was a movie full of cheesy 80's awesomeness and this movie is no different.
The movie has quite an interesting story behind the scenes. Stallone suggested that he and Lundgren trade a few punches for real. Lundgren knocked out Stallone with one punch. Doctors said that the injury was comparable to being in a car accident. Yes, you read that right, Dolph Lundgren can and will break you!
Creed II is going to be about Apollo Creed's son fighting the son of Ivan Drago and Dolph Lundgren is going to be reprising his role as well. I was surprised to see that Brigitte Nielsen will be returning as Drago's wife as well. She and Stallone had a very messy divorce, so I figured she wouldn't be returning. The movie's Wikipedia page says otherwise. I for one am excited to see what happens next.
My rating: 3.5 stars.
