Can'tcha just CTRL+Click the layer to select the contents (Shift+Ctrl+Click to grab both color and lineart) then use a low opacity Multiply Layer? (Not familiar with SAI, but that's how I do it in CS2)

I do the same thing except I don't color the shadow layer white, I just use black and then adjust the opacity of the layer, same result.

heh. That is basically the same thing I did with my test coloring project in Sai. You just went a bit further with more toning than me. Mine was kinda rushed though since I had a trial version though.

Haha, we shade the same way! I like to tweak the color for the shading layer from grey to whatever suits the picture as well.

ah, ye old multiply :3

It's nice until you realize you might need shadows other than black or lights sources other than white :3

You can colorize your shadows, though. Just use dark, low-saturation shades of the color and it works just fine on multiply.

I do something similar in photoshop only it's more airbrushing, the effects in SAI seem to be alot more smoother and blend better as shadows... or I could simply be doing it wrong.

I usually don't agree with adding too many multiply layers to stuff (though I do admit I use them if I'm not painting something), but it has eluded me as to how to get away without it if there's a pattern underneath the shading. SAI actually has a setting to where you can set the brush to a Multiply setting without the layer being in Multiply mode.
