I really fucking like spiders. A lot. Not because of their OMG SPOOKY factor, they are genuinely some of the most awesome little animals on the planet. I've had a tarantula, and I especially like argiopes, ugly little orb weavers, and.. jumping spiders.
So Avery kinda had to happen. He's a Dimorphic Jumping Spider which.. well, have numerous color morphs. You can see the individual spider he's based on, it's the photo (currently anyway) for the Wikipedia article for this species.
The anatomical pointers are for my benefit. Converting arachnid anatomy to humanoid anatomy is a bitch, and I didn't want to risk forgetting any of it. And like a true jumping spider, he has two different types of lungs- the book lungs in the abdomen (I moved them up to get them out of range of his junk to avoid toilet horrors) and a second, humanoid pair in the torso. Most of his digestive system is in the abdomen. Fucker can eat.
The little spider ref leg in the corner is an abomination; I had to use both a jumping spider leg and a tarantula leg as reference to see all seven segments so it kinda, uh.. looks off a lot. Also please excuse my sad, sad handwriting, my tablit pen nib was all screwy and I had forgotten where the replacements were ADURP. Thanks to carnivaldog for help figuring some of the color placement on the limbs and such.
Anyway FUCK YEAH SPIDERS (IN THONGS)

Do you mean daddy long legs as in
Cellar spiders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae OR..
Opiliones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones ?
Opiliones are in the arachnid family, like scorpions, but are not spiders.
Haha sorry pet peeve there. XD We have the fuckers EVERYWHERE in Missouri. They like to sneak into my room around my AC unit and randomly have spazz-runs across the floor. It's very unfortunate for them that I have many cats.
Spiders won't hurt you! Well.. Most spiders won't hurt you! You can handle most species (even black widows) with your bare hands and they won't even try to bite unless you crush/prod them.
I do not however suggest anyone try to pick up a black window. D:

Living in Arizona, my family kept black widows to eat all the crickets. Crickets are evil, noisy, nasty little buggers that spawn like mutant bunnies on crack X.x, so the black widows did us a lot of good. XD
They just set up their webs all around the outside of the house. Mostly by the front and back porch.

The top one :D they would make webs EVERY WHERE but I couldn't stad to kill them.
But man, after having a huge brown wolf spider run across my face as a kid. I kill amost every spider I see anymore out of intense fear. I have been getting better thought and have been capturing them in jars and setting them free.
We actually have a picture of me when I was little with a black widow hanging from my finger. I'm surprised I wasn't scarred from that. then again, I was so young I didn't understand fear.

I was about to say, definitely the top ones - those Harvestmen look creepy and I've never seen any. XD I live in California as well, lots and lots of "daddy long legs" everywhere. I was raised to release spiders outside, not kill them, and I have a pet tarantula. <3
Awesome piece. :3 This art is just wicked.

They make really cool pets, just.. if you do, get a mexican redknee, a rosehair, or a pinktoe. Those are the "beginner species." All three species have urticating hairs if I remember right, though. Surprising them isn't smooth, especially since most spiders are nearly blind.
DURP DURP RAMBLE.

How could you possibly be afraid of something like this? http://brokenbay.files.wordpress.co.....man-spider.jpg Look at his cute little puppydog eyes.
Haha, thanks though. :D

I don't know how you can physically make a spider as adorable as a puppy. ;~; I want to pet his pedipalps so muuuch.
I feel bad for him in one way, though - if he ever got into a fight, all you'd have to do is literally kick his ass and you'd do some serious damage. >:
Seriously, though, he is so cash. DRAW HIM PLENTY.

I love this guy, holy shit. I love jumping spiders...I had a "pet" black and white (with BRIGHT green eyes!) one that lived in the vitamin bottle forest that was my kitchen counter. I fed him little crickets. He would always come out and jump around when I moved his bottles around...I miss Sam. :c
Awww, I need to draw this dude. Any particular scenario that fits his personality well?

I wish you still had your Sam! Jumping spiders are curious about people, and smarter than most other species (HUGE brains).. probably why he hung around. He sounds adorable. D:
And oh god that's be fucking awesome. 8| Aah.. Well, he's kinda shy, kinda nerdy, and tends to dislike "normal" anthros like wolves/foxes/cats. I imagine even with anthros, some of them pull the "EWW A SPIDER!" thing. X> So yeah, if you draw him that'd be rockin', and you can do pretty much anything you want with him.

Oh god jumping spiders are the most adorable critters ever.
I've never seen an anthromorphic spider before, and if I do ever see one I can bet that it won't even come close to as good as this is. It's almost insane how anatomically correct he is!
Also, I totally want an action figure or a stuffed figure of him : )

Spider anthro! Now that you've done it, I'm surprised I haven't seen it more before! The only anthro I've ever seen of critters with exoskeletons have been wasps.
I am surprised how much I like little Avery, given that I'm somewhat arachnophobic. I would love to see more close-up diagrams of his oral anatomy. And PEDIPALPS <3333333 And my other thought was that images of him spinning a web would be, in a weird way, quite erotic.
I also love that you included the abdomen! But one question--how does one wear a thong when one has an abdomen like that? WHERE DOES THE BUTTFLOSS PART GO?????

I've seen a LOT of anthro wasps, moths, and cockroaches. I have seen a few spiders before, but not many- and that's when I was intentionally looking to see if they even existed, haha.
I actually intended to draw some diagrams of how his mouth works. I don't think I'll ever try to draw the skeletal anatomy of his torso, though.. It's a friggin' nightmare ugh.
I really should draw him spinning a web to take a nap in. Naked, just for the hell of it. :V
The back of the thong would probably be a circle, kinda like the back fabric of his pants there. :D

Dude, I'd fucking make a suit of him and wear it myself if I could figure out how to keep the four extra arms-on-strings from being really awkward or Uncanny Valley. XD
Then again making them creepy might be a bonus. Chasing arachnophobes around in my chitinysuit would be fun.

Fucking hell, this is seriously the first character reference I've ever seen that simultaneously made me want to draw said character, and create another character of my own. Of course, truth be told, I've had the insane urge to make a spider or drider character for a very very long time already. Some of my favorite animals, and you chose an awesome species for him.
Being that my very first pet growing up that was my own was a tarantula I can attest to this all the way <3 I was always the one saving my dad from the big scary spider in the bathtub/wall/ceiling/EVERYWHERE (my house was crawing with massive spiders and still is <3) And I still remain the savior to the spiders to this day, just scooping them up without second thought and moving them outside.
Haha you make me want to make a zipper spider character or bring back my old emperor scorpion ;A; <33

Is a zipper spider an argiope? People keep saying "zipper spider" and argiopes are the only things that come to mind. We call them writing spiders or zigzag spiders here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argiope_(spider) Picture gallery further down the page, as these spiders are all over the world.
And oh god, I've had to do so many spider rescues. Or in the case of recluses, spider SMASHES. D: I'm arachnophobic ONLY when it comes to that species. Lolling at you rescuing your dad from them though.

Argiope's are indeed zipper spiders <333 My brother get's some absolutely beautiful giant females at his house in texas and guh... I love them so much :C
And sdgfdsfgsdfg okay yes in the recluses case theres been a good few "huh theres a spide---OHSHII---grabs closest thing and SMASHES THE FUCK OUT OF-
9A9 their beautiful and all but I'm sorry I'll be a hypocrite and kill the fuckers if it means avoiding necrosis.
But yeah xD My father had a horrible problem with arachnophobia so when I was 5-6 he got me a rose haired tarantula so that I wouldn't be afraid of them like he was.

Because most spiders have six spinnerets with one vestigial spinneret. Some have just four or even two. I couldn't find any reference the the number on Dimorphic jumpers, so I went with the generic version, haha. One species I can't remember the name of also has them on the feet, though.
i think hes really cute.
normaly spiders scare me, i like spiders, but the sight of them scares me to no end
this guy i find to be very adorable, espcaly his eyes. i like the fact his purple fang things sticking out of his mouth, fold up into his hallow "nose" wich would make talking with him more of a comfterble situation.
You did a very creative job in designing him, the colors are very nice, sorta reminds me of terra branfords esper form; color wise.
i can honestly say i could see my self having a crush on him.

God dammit is this ever awesome. I've been seeing so many new bug/arachnid caharcters around lately and it makes me SQUEAL! I adore the amount of detail you put into this guy, I never even considered working all the segments of a bug's legs into their anthro design. I also love how the amount of eyes he has makes it so he HAS to have a mohawk. x)
This guy fills me so, so full of happy. God, wow. I'm so glad Niiku showed me this the other day on her computer, I just HAD to find Avery and fav him myself. Unf. I have a fem jumper in mind, myself. This guy inspires me!
I'm just.
Ugh.
*squeeze* His design, his whole look, the way you made a spider look very appealing, gentle and social even, and not purposely scary, that really makes me happy.

Looks great! ^^ Personally love the eyes and hair, and details on his clothes (shading and such) but yeah, not usually a fan of spiders (thankfully in England we dont have many bigger species) but this is really cool! Adapting his anatomy to be more humanoid has turned out really well. :V
Awesome spider! ::D
Normally I wouldn't bother, but since you seemed so gung-ho about spiders in your post, I might as well show you my spider character, ArachNed: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/636214/

I think any interest in insects tends to stem more so from a love of intricacy and engineering than form th HURRRR CREEPY aspect, this is remarkably well done
and While everyone is saying they are surprised that Vera hasn't seen it ,I'm doubly taken back that Thumbclawz hasnt

Looking back through some of your art, and was looking at this guy, and thought, "HAY U GUIZE I BREATHE WITH MY BUTT :D" This is probably why I shouldn't draw - I am a retard xD
Oh man - out in winters CA we had heteropoda venatoria, those things are magical. really, it's breathtaking. They just appear and disappear. When a spider the size of your hand has powers of that magnitude, it can be a little unsettling. I had a hard time showering. Or sleeping.
