I should mention theres a weird story that goes with this.
(This was told to me when I lived in Tucson, but its never been confirmed.)
Years ago, Arizona passed a law to make it illegal to dig up saguaro cactus to sell for landscaping.
California did not pass any similar laws for some time.
Since these cactus were just becoming popular for landscaping, there was a sudden demand.
Saguaro used to grow a short distance into California- A few miles, but I have no idea how far the range actually extended.
So people eager to cash in on the demand dug up all the California saguaro and sold them off.
I am told you can find saguaro right up to the border on the Arizona side...But never inside California anymore as a result.
As I said, the story was related to me when I lived in Arizona, but I have never been able to see if its true.
But I thought it was strange and interesting enough to mention.
