Wrong Side of the Bed

The city hummed its eternal rush as blood pounded out his heartbeat. The man’s thoughts flickered back to the race as his Electrovolt Beamster hugged the curves. He felt the vehicle lurch as he started out onto the wide loop which lead up and away from the main drag. He checked for cops, and seeing none, darted between cars. It came as natural to him as breathing. Even after the race was done, and lost, its echo still surged through his thoughts - an adrenaline ghost. As his wheels spun, his souped-up smart car drifting ever-so-slightly, his eyes shot open as he saw a wall of red before him. The tunnel down to his quadrant should be empty by now.
“FUCK!” he said, coming up upon sudden and unexpected traffic. It wasn’t people leaving the races. They always let the teams leave before those in attendance. He slammed on the brakes, hitting the back of his seat. Someone blared their horn inside the tunnel up ashead. As he gripped the wheel, it took everything he had not to do the same. His mind and body was sore from the race. All he wanted was to be home with Shelby.
Traffic crept on for nearly an hour, the sun slowly setting as they marched like ants through the pipe. Eventually, the lights flickered on as they neared the exit. Suddenly, traffic started to pick up as cars merged out of their respective lanes. Engines roared as traffic resumed its usual pace. Of course… fucking construction. Just his luck. Paulius wished that city driving went as smoothly as it did on the track. Even when your fellow drivers got in your way - at least they knew what they were doing. Everyone else seemed to be asleep at the wheel.
By the time he arrived at their apartment, he was exhausted. He knocked on his door, hearing heavy footsteps soon after. As soon as the door opened, his tired expression melted into a warm smile. A white glow filled his eyes as the towering anthro within grinned down at him.
“Late one, eh?” Shelby said, rubbing his paw on the human’s shoulder as he stepped inside.
Paulius forced a smile, a headache panging against his temples as he dropped his gear by the door. Just traffic mostly. The beltway got all fucked up with construction.”
“And how was the race, hmmm?” he said softly in that baritone voice of his.
“It was good. Just… they kept stalling us. Same shit as last week. New guy’s rules. But everyone really brought their A-game. Crowd loved it. Might even take the guys out to the beach on the dust-lot. They have their own carts. But we all pretty much broke our first season numbers today. Just… tired,” he yawned, limping over to the couch.
“Dinner’s in the kitchen, P,” he said, rubbing softly. The anthro sure knew how to give a good massage. Paulius shrugged his shoulders, his neck muscles growing warm from the massage. He imagined if he had ears like the anthro, they would lay back in pleasure. He had noticed himself picking up certain weird habits from Shelby. Almost like there was some sort of link between the two. Shelby had teased him as if he knew more, but would never say. He just felt some sort of connection - not in a sexual way, but rather the two were very, very close friends. Almost like brothers, though of course that was impossible. Paulius was from New Krechnova, and Shelby was… Actually, he’d never explained where people like him came from.
You see, anthros were treated like second-class citizens. Most places would never let Shelby rent an apartment - especially downtown - on his own. Of course, Paulius had been glad to help the anthro out. And it had been one of the better decisions of his life.
Paulius nodded warmly, rubbing his eyes. Even now, he still smelled diesel from time to time, the sound and rattle of the race still echoing in his thoughts. He just prayed he would not dream about the race that night. The human plodded into the kitchen slowly, making himself a bowl of soup and bread before returning back to the living room. His soup sloshed close to the rim as he returned to see Shelby on the couch, his whole body leaned over the table as he slurped directly from the bowl. Paulius shook his head as he took a seat, pushing the anthro’s tail over with his foot.
The human sighed as he let his leg and back muscles relax for the first time all day. Even sitting, when he was behind the wheel of a race-car, they had to strain constantly, always ready to react to the slightest movement of his peers. It only took one car to start a multi-car crash. And that would mess up the whole team’s numbers for that year.
The anthro’s large black and white ear turned as he withdrew from the bowl. He sniffled in satisfaction, slurping down the last of his soup. Some dripped from the fur on his chin. The anthro dabbed it with a towel, licking his fangs as he looked to Paulius.
He smiled, sitting back with him as the human set his bowl on the table. “Thanks for making dinner,” Paulius said.
“No problem, P,” he said, rubbing his shoulder again. Paulius pulled away for a moment to eat some of his soup. He almost wasn’t hungry after the day he had had. There was so much tension on the track. So much waiting behind the pace car before the race could even begin. Then, that half hour where that kid had fallen onto the track. Cars didn’t have to be going fast for the anxiety to build in your arms and back. Racing was half a mental sport, after all.
After a few slurps, Paulius finished off with a few mouthfuls of bread to make himself full. He set the bowl on the small table close to the kitchen as he waddled into their bedroom. He heard Shelby doing stuff in the kitchen - probably cleaning up - as he collapsed into bed. He sighed again, pulling out his phone as he set his alarm for the next day. There wasn’t a race, but there was a rehearsal.
He nodded off for a few minutes before long. He didn’t even remember falling asleep. But some time later, he was awoken by the sound of Shelby closing the shower door. He heard the water running for a few seconds before it turned off. Water sloshed against the shower curtain as he shook off. Soon, the anthro was by the bedside. Paulius heard him whisper something before he felt his weight shift the mattress. Paulius turned, looking up to see his bare, black and white-furred chest above him. The naked anthro dropped his towel as he crawled into bed. Paulius giggled as he got into bed. Anthros didn’t have the same hangup when it came to clothes that humans did. Shelby didn’t see how it was weird. Paulius had gotten used to it.
“You awake, P?” he said, almost surprised. Shelby hoped the human hadn’t heard what he had whispered.
Paulius grunted, rolling over. Shelby flopped down next to him, burying his face in his damp fur. Paulius laughed, kicking against him. The anthro was warm against him, his fur wet but comforting as the scent of his shampoo and pelt filled his nose. After a busy day, it smelled like home. As Paulius pulled his face away, Shelby wrapped his arms around him, wrapping him into a hug as he chuckled too. His deep laugh vibrated against Paulius as he said…
“I have a surprise I’ve been wanting to show you,” he said, “But it can wait until morning.”
Paulius gave in, nuzzling his face into his friend’s fur. Shelby said something in that strange furry language he sometimes spoke in while alone. Paulius would have to get him to teach it to him. As he spoke, a strange feeling opened up in his mind. Paulius felt himself shudder as Shelby pulled him closer. He stroked a claw along his neck as he smiled, looking downwards. For an instant, Paulius almost felt like he was being drawn out of himself - but just as swiftly, the feeling passed.
“What kind of surp-?” he started, but was quickly hushed as he put a furry finger to Paulius’ lips. Shelby squeezed him again, nuzzling his neck as he said, “Morning, P. You’ll see…”
Paulius laughed. “Okay, okay,” he said, “Thanks for the massage. You always know just where to hit.”
PAULIUS’ ALARM SCREECHED, his phone vibrating as it went off. He groaned in a deep voice, turning over in bed. As his eyes fluttered open, he noticed first that he was on the wrong side of the bed. His phone was on the far side of the bed from where he lay. He stretched a long arm out to it, his skin tingling oddly as he rolled back over. He felt an odd weight follow him under the covers as he reached for it.
Something really did feel weird. But all he could think about was shutting off his alarm and getting ready for rehearsal. He grabbed his phone from under his pillow. Silly him, he had forgotten to put it charging on the bedside table. A pointed claw grazed the screen as he pushed the Sleep button. Paulius felt his ear swivel oddly as he tried to figure out why he felt so strange. Of course, he shouldn’t have claws…
In his confusion, he accidentally swiped up, activating the front-facing camera. The screen was dark for an instant before the camera adjusted to the light. And when it did, he saw Shelby’s face staring back up at him. Did he leave a selfie on his phone as a prank? Then, he saw the ears move.
“What the…?” he growled in a deep voice. The anthro in his phone spoke in time with him. He shouted out, turning toward the light he saw in the bathroom. “S- Shelby?!” he said, crawling out of bed.
As he leaned over, he peered into the bathroom. His eyes widened as there, in front of the mirror, he saw a facsimile of himself brushing its teeth casually. Paulius’s mind spun as he leaned over, then wobbled as he tumbled out of bed to the crimson carpet below. As he tumbled down. The blanket came with him. The copy of him smiled, his mouth full of toothpaste as it watched him, before closing the door.
“One secooond!” called a voice similar to his own, but different. As the bathroom door closed, the light shifted, the lamp in the far corner illuminating the bedroom still. Paulius squirmed under the blanket, kicking it off of him as he tried to wrap his mind around what he was seeing. He peeled it off of him, tossing it to the side, and as he did so, he saw his bare, fur-covered body filled with familiar black and white patterns. But this was wrong. This wasn’t his body. It - it was Shelby’s!
As he gazed down, he saw the myriad of black and white stripes. A long, furry tail spread out from between his legs across the carpet. “Sh- SHEEEELBYYY!” he cried in desperation, trying not to gain the attention of whatever that was in the bathroom. Was it him… was it something else? Paulius breathed heavily, his entire body shaking as he listened for a response.
“One second, one second,” the not-him said, opening the door.
Paulius heard a whimper escape his throat as he watched himself - or what should be him - walk over. Paulius yanked at the thick fur on his naked chest, which to his new nose still smelled of last night’s shampoo. His chest rose and fell as he breathed heavily.
“Gosh, you’re handsome,” the human said. Paulius’s ears swiveled as he heard the intonations of his voice.
“S- Shelby?” he gasped, looking at the version of himself before him. He smiled in that way of his, somehow still animal-like even in human form. The huan him smiled, pushing back a stray hair.
“I told you there was a surprise I wanted to show you,” he grinned sheepishly. Seeing him gring that way, Paulius wondered - had his canines always been that sharp.
“I- I- I don’t get it,” he said, looking down at himself, still plainly in shock, “You’re me, and I’m you? How did…?”
Shelby chuckled, wiping away a stray bit of toothpaste from his lips. “We’re pretty similar. Maybe more than I could let on when we first met. But that’s all I can say right now. But, I figured I’d go ahead and show you. Wasn’t sure it would work. It’s actually really easy,” Shelby said, extending his hand.
Paulius wrapped his paw around it as his friend helped him to his feet. The anthro turned around, looking over his new body - well, Shelby’s body - now that he at least knew it wasn’t some cosmic mistake. At least he wasn’t going crazy.
That had crossed his mind too.
Human Shelby lead Paulius into the bathroom. He flicked the light back on, Paulius’ enormous ears turning back as his eyes adjusted to the brightness. The large mirror which stretched from wall-to-shower showed each of them there. Seeing himself in Shelby’s body, his paw lt go of him. Paulius leaned forward, putting his paws on either side of his long snout.
“Oh god god,” he said. Shelby snorted softly, “Oh my GOD! I’m- I’m YOU! How did you do this?” he said again, more firmly.
“I can’t say very much. But any time you want to take a day off, we can just… swap out,” Shelby grinned, arching his neck in that sweeping sideways motion he always did. “It does feel weird not having a tail, though. You… you humans sure are attached to your clothes. Do you still get in trouble in you go outside naked?”
Paulius turned suddenly, his tail flicking as his eyes narrowed. “D- Don’t you dare! Can we swap back now? This is pretty weird. I have to leave in thirty for rehearsal.”
Shelby patted him on the head, scratching him like a cat. “Don’t worry. I know the laws here. And you won’t have to worry about your job today. I got you covered.”
“B- B- But….!” Paulius said.
Shelby turned towards the door, starting to pull it closed. “It’s just rehearsal, right? I drove plenty, back home. Kinda the same type of thing. A bit rusty these days, but - Oh, that’s the other thing. We can only swap once every twenty-four hours.
Shelby ducked out of the doorway, gathering Paulius’ things as he went for the door. “Bye,” he said softly, his tail falling to the tile floor as he lumbered after him.
“It’s okay,” Shelby grinned, grabbing his keys, “I won’t wreck your practice score too much. Later, fuzzy!”
The door clicked closed, leaving Paulius alone in his apartment for the first time in… months. Maybe a year. He waddled over to the couch, flopping down onto the cushion as he smoothed down his fur. His tail flicked back and forth as he settled into his new situation. He looked around the apartment, clicking on the TV to some random channel as he wondered just what his anthro roommate got up to all day.
Would be be offended if he tried to do his usual cleaning? He’d have to get him to explain just how this was possible. He knew they were close friends, but this? Paulius had to know.
