< Part 4
The movie had ended and relatively two hours of peace had been enjoyed, Sherri enjoyed the theater before and now she was able to enjoy it three times as much. The small family slowly walked out of the theater, Sherri following behind as the two boys pretended to use their ‘super powers’ in play with one another, her youngest following beside and tweeting on her phone about it. The Incredibles 2 provided to be a fine sequel, and she was quite pleased with how her kids enjoyed it.
Who would have thought that the party-girl and sex-hound that Sherri had been only a few years ago would now be a doting mom? She smiled at the thought, glancing over to her pups.
Ryan was a boisterous and mischievous little critter. He had inherited, Wolver’s love for hockey. It only seemed natural that she name him after his father’s favorite player. He was a natural leader, and it showed with how he would get the rest of the group to follow along in his schemes and ideas.
Edgar, or as he preferred it, Eddie, was a little less of a handful but when paired with his big brother they were inseparable. He was a husky through and through, and Vinni’s pup obviously. Sherri particularly loved it when his ears would perk and be oh so alert then plop over like her own.
And finally, little Mairi, contrary to the boys she was much more well behaved, however she had a tendency to egg the boys on by promising to film their exploits. She was such a good girl, and yet Sherri knew of that manipulative sweetness that the little piglet could use, she was Maria’s after all.
Sherri had a bit of selfish pride, while they had taken on the more physical features of their fathers, they each had a little bit of Sherri in them, their little blue tongues and pawpads matching one another’s and her own. It was in that brief moment of reflection that she felt a sudden tug on the leash and chaos erupted around her.
“Mom! That boy took my wish from the fountain!”
Sherri was about to turn to the side when suddenly she saw something fly in front of her face and over into the nearby mall-restaurant. “What in the..” The momma dog’s ears perked only to see that Eddie was about to throw his other shoe. “Eddie!” Sherri barked, but the small husky showed no fear even as he stopped at her command. “Do.. not… thro-“
“HEY WHO’S KID IS SWIMMING IN THE FOUNTAIN?!”
Something deep down inside Sherri’s gut told her it was Ryan, something, somehow, some maternal instinct swore that her son was doing something crazy. In that split second Eddie took control and threw his other shoe! “Eddie!” Sherri shouted.
“I’m calling Mall Security this is insane!”
“Waiter, there’s a shoe in my salad.”
“Who throwing shoes?!”
Fortunately being a mom had taught Sherri how to triage situations like this, with Mairi only playing videographer it boiled down to two situations she had to solve. The first of which was to keep her and Ryan out of mall jail! She looked towards the fountain only to find it devoid of her son, maybe Ryan was behaving after all and just took off for a minute.
“EDDIE! MAIRI! I GOT ENOUGH!” Ryan called out as he surfaced, his eyes wide when he saw the look of fury that only a fed up mother could have. “Uh oh..” He quickly dove back underneath the water while Sherri lunged at him, barely able to balance her abdomen on the rim of the fountain as she splashed forwards in the water.
He evaded her grasp for a moment but the slippery wolverine boy was no match for a determined mom, and with another lunge she had wrapped her arms around him to pull him from the depths. His little legs kicking back and forth as he tried to wriggle from her grasp. “Uh uh! I gotcha!” Sherri laughed softly, partially from nervousness and catching her prey, just like in the old days.
Sherri plopped the little critter down beside his now barepaw brother and his sister, water dripping from his tiny frame as Sherri stood over them. They were in trouble big time and they knew it.
Sherri was drenched, and Ryan was a mess, it meant another load of laundry and having to fuss with Ryan to take a bath after swimming around in that wishing fountain which was contaminated with what, god only knows. She glared down at the trio, her hands on her hips and a stern frown upon her face. “And what were you three plotting to get this time?”
There was a collective silence between them, noses pointed to the ground and solemn faces all. The only thing that broke the silence was a small pair of hands lifting up from the center, in them was the prize Ryan had sought in the wishing well. Quarters, half dollars, gold dollars, Sherri blinked at the large coins that occupied his hands.
“We wanted to get ice cream after the movie, and.. we got enough for you too.” Ryan murmured softly, his ears wilted and weakened by his mother’s scowl. Yet in that instant Sherri’s heart went soft.
A deep sigh escaped her lips as she glanced towards Mairi and Edgar. “Guys..” Sherri knelt down towards their level, her lips pursed slightly. “You don’t need to steal to get ice cream, those quarters are peoples wishes. They take their coins and toss them into the water in hopes that it’ll help make their dream come true.” In truth it probably went to the mall janitorial staff but now wasn’t the time for morality conflicts.
“What if someone’s dream was to buy ice cream though?” Eddie murmured softly, raising his eyes to Sherri with his tail giving a small hopeful wag.
“Yeah Mom! We made people’s wishes come true!” Ryan stood a little more proud of himself.
And of course, Mairi had to chime in. “There is logical probability some wishes could have been made for ice cream.”
And the pangs of motherhood that Ellie had promised her once again surfaced in this brief moment, she lifted her hand defeated and slowly pressed it against her face. “You guys don’t deserve it but fine, we’ll get ice cream on the way home.”
Cheers erupted from her pups mouths and she felt a swelling of happiness fill her, it was different than when she opened money rares from booster packs or bought herself a cute pair of shoes. Something about making her pups happy brought something out from within her, Ellie had always called it a ‘Mom Happy’ when she first tried to describe it over coffee one day. She gave a soft smile and picked up Eddie who had lost his shoes in the scuffle and looked down at Ryan and Mairi. “You’ll be sitting on a towel until we get home buster.” Sherri tapped his nose with a single fingertip.
“Okay Mom, I’m setting up the GPS Navigator to Bruester’s Ice Cream.” Mairi already had her phone ready for it, Sherri had such diabolical little pups.
“That’s my girl.” Sherri glanced over and started to walk towards the exit of the mall, it had been resolved, the Mall Security didn’t show up and she wasn’t labeled a bad mother in front of the crowd. …or so she hoped.
“Hey Mom! Can I keep the moneys anyways?” Ryan glanced up, while still holding his riches in his palms.
Sherri’s eyes stared daggers at him. “If you don’t put that money back in the fountain you’ll be getting a spanking flavored ice cream!”
“HA! Mom told you!” Mairi guffawed. “I’m so tweeting that!”
“Oh, mom, my shoes are over there..” Eddie tapped at her shoulder while pointing towards the café his shoes had ventured to.
It took a few moments to get them all loaded up in the van, it was still sort of weird, Sherri having traded in her spicy little sexy mustang for a more motherly mini-van, but they were much more comfortable this way. Sherri glanced back through the rearview mirror to see her pups sitting semi-content, each of them discussing which flavor they were going to get, it was a big decision after all! She gave a soft sigh and slowly maneuvered the car into reverse. For all the pitfalls and nuisances she wouldn’t trade being a mom for anything in the world.
“Mooom! Ryan said he’s going to eat my ice cream!” Mairi obviously shocked at such a horrific notion. “Tell him he can’t!”
“Well tell Mairi that she can’t have rocky road because it has NUTS, and only BOYS can have nuts!” Sherri wasn’t going to debate that, she didn’t have the time, or the energy to go into how they were all related again.
“Mom, I want peanut butter okay?” Eddie raised his hand, always the good boy.
Her head slipped forwards until she bumped it against the steering wheel. “Okay! Who wants to go to Memaw Ellie’s for the day?” While she wouldn’t trade being a mom for anything in the world, she’d let Ellie have a turn for a while!
I frequently get the question about 'Sherri's Puppies' and... I do hope this settles it once and for all :P
