The weasel on the left is Richard Marten, known to his friends as Dick. He's a senior petty officer in the Rain Island Naval Syndicate, stationed at their base on Moon Island in the Spontoons.

The horse on the right is Daniel Roan, known to his friends as Dan. He's an American businessman, based out of the Spontoons and Hawai'i, wanting to stay away from the United States. In 1938, sexual inverts like homosexuals were shunned when they weren't being treated like criminals.

In various parts of the Pacific, though (like the Spontoons and Rain Island), same-gender marriage is legal and inversion is tolerated.

Dick and Dan have been engaged for about a year before they finally took The Big Step in mid-summer of 1938. This is their first kiss as newlyweds.

Let's hear it for the happy couple.
