Ulfr: Wolf (Old Norse)
This is the first piece I have made for myself. Why wolves so grip my imagination I doubt I shall ever know, but after seeing a beautiful photograph of a wolf's eye while browsing art for another piece, I quickly sketched the shape of the eye and the markings surrounding it and later I adjusted and reworked the design to come up with this. The piece is carved from solid sterling silver. Initially the markings, lines around the eye and pupil were meant to be stained black with oxidant, but at the advice of my mentor I left the piece as you see. In a way, I like how the eye of the wolf fades in and out of sight as the light shifts, as though it was moving through the shadows of the underbrush, flickering in and out of view.
Detailing:
- on the back is a silver bracket styled after a dagger with the name "ULFR" stamped into the 'blade'
- the M stamped into the bracket represents a.) my middle name Michael, b.) the mountains of my home, and c.) the wild land which those mountains protect and which I occasionally have the pleasure of immersing myself in.
- the cord is real leather which I platted myself for a better feel
(All of my silver and gold pieces are entirely hand made, from melting and rolling the metal to sawing, shaping, soldering and finishing. The designs are my own and may be re-imagined, but every piece is an exclusive once off production~)
