Oh, that was the worst way she could have phrased that. However he responds, she can take it as a negative. If he says "yes", "yes, it does make you look fat." If he says "no", because she asked "doesn't it", she could read it as "no, it does make you look fat."

Some languages had different forms of "yes" and "no" depending on if you were responding to a negatively framed question. A number of European languages today use three forms (two for "yes", one for "no").

If we still used four forms in English (yes, no, yea, and nay), the safest answer would be "no".

In Korean, the proper answer would be "yes", i.e. "yes, it doesn't make you look fat".
