Moose center Alan Chesuk is used to being one of the most dominant big men in the FBA. His giant size, incredible strength and surprising quickness result in powerful slam dunks, unstoppable post-up moves, and thunderous alley-oops. In Game 1 of the 2009 FBA Finals, 'The Frost Giant' easily scored at will over the head of Thrust starting center Billy Joe James. When it was clear the mule was not going to get the job done, the coach made the surprising decision to put bench power forward otter Paul Teronura into the center position.
The decision paid off, and by series' end, Chesuk was sick of Teronura's surprising tenacity and ability to block shots. In one dramatic moment of Game 7, Teronura managed to block Chesuk 3 times in a row-- in 5 seconds. In this pic, the big moose considers smashing the otter's face. And the big otter isn't about to back down an inch.
This was the first commission I got at Rainfurrest '09, from one of my very favorite artists,
balto. I had originally requested an uncolored ink drawing, but my good friend
farallon surprised me by paying to have it colored!
I really love this piece. Alan Chesuk and Paul Teronura were two of the most important players in the 2009 FBA Finals, both making a big difference for their teams. They deserved to be drawn. And I love how this picture gets across both the size differences between the two centers and the frustration between them. Chesuk shoved Teronura off his feet in Game 2. And Teronura famously taunted Chesuk by showing him his hands. When next season begins, these two will still be hating each other!

I can feel the tension, I haven't seen athletes stare at each other like that since F1's Schumacher and Alonso's title battle back in 2006. *remembers the good times* Yeah, Ferrari versus Renault....
He really did a good job on this one, if you don't mind, I'll go fave the one he loaded on his page, it's only fair

It's hard to judge the size of a baller when there's only other ballers around. Teronura is supposed to be a good 5-6" shorter than Chesuk. And no doubt Chesuk's antlers make him look even taller.
The first time I saw J.J. Barea play, I couldn't help but think, what a shrimp! Turns out he's as tall as I am, 6' 0". But that's what happens when you share the court with Dirk Nowitzki.

Yeah, it's certainly not hardcore, but I adore
balto's style. In my mind, it's what the FBA would look like if it were a Saturday morning cartoon. And I find it reminiscent of the Jordan era when Warner Bros. was making merchandise of their classic characters in street and baller outfits.
