They're actually in their own family, if research serves me right. So not canine or dog related at all, family wise. :D The family's called "Hyaenidae", and are apparently more closely related to mongooses and meerkats than canines... and yeah, I love Hyenas too. And those expressions are adorable! :)

Actually, recently the giant panda (the red panda is still being debated, and has been put in it's own family) has been proven to be molecularly similar to bears, and determined a true bear! :D I learned this recently because I saw a bear chart with a panda on it, and double checked to see if the raccoon thing still stood.
