I used a new Kestrel character I've been toying with lately. (Instead of changing my character every six months or less I thought I'd just draw whatever with the same markings on so whatev). Birds are really interesting to put expressions on.
I highly recommend doing this. Afterwards you can pretty much draw the character with your eyes closed, but don't think this is a ten minute job :P

It's a good exercize, and I'm trying to mix up the tiles and see if I can actually confuse one for the other, and there are some where I can...
It's probably because I seldom see incredulous emoted in comics, but WTF, incredulous and confusion really do seem interchangeable to me. I think there is a basic commonality between them and I guess adding a wing gesture makes it seem more intense, but I think there must be some shock added too, so not just extreme confusion but shock - ruffled feathers or eyes out of focus or cockeyed for a WTF feeling.
Here's what might be an educational guide on basic emotions:
Emotion-opposite
Joy Sadness
Trust Disgust
Fear Anger
Surprise Anticipation
Sadness Joy
Disgust Trust
Anger Fear
Anticipation Surprise
Mix these emotions and you have these complex combinations:
Adv.Emot. - Combo - Adv.Opp.
Optimism Anticipation + Joy Disappointment
Love Joy + Acceptance Remorse
Submission Acceptance + Fear Contempt
Awe Fear + Surprise Aggressiveness
Disappointment Surprise + Sadness Optimism
Remorse Sadness + Disgust Love
Contempt Disgust + Anger Submission
Aggressiveness Anger + Anticipation Awe
I don't currently have any easy links on facial studies on how these emotions appear, but apparently it is true that regardless of culture, we all do broadcast these emotions the same way.
The more you know*

I've seen a bunch of these, and I've always noticed that one critical expression is always missing (whether or not the expression set is meant for naughty expressions or not). I never see anyone including a jaw drop (like when you see/find out something profound that completely, and suddenly, proves you wrong, or you see/hear/are informed of something you never thought was possible).
