It looks most like a short-glaive (a cleaver like blade on a pole) of around the 13th century to me. Later on towards the end of the 14th century and the 15th, they developed metal strips riveted down the side of the shaft to prevent it being cut and a cup like thing to stop sword blades sliding down the shaft and cutting the wielders hands.
It's called a quandao, or "swordstave" in Mandarin. It's a weapon used by the deity of fighting and literature, General Quan.
They can weigh up to 100lbs, by legend's standards, but were realistically only a bit hefty and used to cleave bodies in half by dragging across the ground, the body in the path of the blade.
Preyfar's one, uhh... Strong mofo XD

To properly imagine the dragging cut, imagine the user has the blade behind him, perhaps being drawn.
The user begins drawing the blade around his body toward the front, turning his body in an arc as he does so. (This often leads the opponent to expect a Slice, or horizontal strike).
As he reaches the halfway mark, the user forces the blade vertical, "dragging" against the inertial desire of the weapon to remain horizontal. (Thus the name.)
The user then brings the blade down in a vertical strike called a Hack.
The combined move is called a "dragging cut".
Now imagine what a traditional 100-pound kwan dao did to the opponent when this move was executed...

Keep in mind that the kwan dao was designed to be used only by the largest and strongest warriors. A comparative weapon was the zhan ma dao, or "horse killing blade", used as an anti-cavalry weapon during the Song Dynasty; surviving examples are about three feet long.
Many of the movements for the kwan dao are designed for use with a heavier blade; one as light as the modern kwan dao fails to take advantage of the full momentum imparted by the Slice, for example.

Awesome perspective on this onee, man!
Don't mean to be critical or nuthin, but the left leg looks awkward where it is. you prolly already might know that o_O so that's all I'll say.
Love the colours and the lighting tho! It really makes me feel the depth almost kinda :D
*can't speak/type very well at the moment*
