Update on my senior project goings on. Amazingly, my freakin' new phone's camera is far superior to the old camera I had. 8I I need a new camera, hopefully I can get one soon.
Head's about 75% completed. and I started over on the arms there in the background. They weren't looking right. I'll post up her new gills as well. I'm really having fun with it now and I'm liking it SO MUCH BETTER now that I have some experience.
Haze belongs to me, don't steal
And stay tuned for more of my Senior Project

Yeah. I'm making the arms, head for my senior project at school and the legs and tail sometime later. I want to go into movie effects, so I just chose the character I have and am making her come to life.
The head and arms will be completed by december (with luck x-x) cos that's when I'm graduating. You can check back in previous journals for more info on it.

It's called ROMA Plasticina. And the head underneath is a cast of my own head/bust. It was fun.
Thank you.
I'm not in a class, I'm pretty well self taught (with a good mentor at our school) and I want to go into movie effects. This is part of my portfolio.

ah i see, is it hard to work with or is it just something you get a hang of as you go on??
and you're very welcome ^^
nice i'm self taught as well, but i needed help so I have entered college i'm on my 2nd year for illustration but i'm looking into making a fursuit of my own soon, and i wanted to find a good way to make it so it wasn't bulky like most

Plasticina needs to be heated up to get soft. I used a heat gun in a cardboard box lined with foil. That heated up the pounds of clay, then I cut them into smaller pieces that i can work without using the heat gun. It's also sulfur based, so it has a musty smell to it. It's an oil based clay, so now keeping it moist with water (that makes it easier).
This isn't really a fursuit, but I know what you mean. I make other masks that are very light-weight that are much simpler than this to make as well. No moulding and casting involved. I'm drawn to making things more realistic too, that's why I don't make mascot heads. No offense to anyone O-o

lol i see, so it's a constant watch with the Plasticina that makes sense it looked like it would be...
the most i've ever used was potter's clay for school... i'm getting liquid latex for a Harley Quinn outfit but that's nothing that can be used for things like this
oh no i know what you mean, that's why i wanted to make a fursuit of my own, it will actually look like a wolf with lynx/cat features i dn't care for the huge eyed bulk suits that most people make... nor dose my bf lol ><
thanks for the advice and the answers, i always want to learn more

Oops. With Plasticina you don't have to keep it moist like water-based clay. x-x I'm throwing typos in all over the place, atm.
Potter's clay should be water based, so this is a different type of clay. It's not gritty like water-clay, it's really smooth. There's different levels of the clay, hardness that is. I think mine's a 3.
Np, let me know if you want to know anything else

no no that's okay i understand i've been doing that all day only speaking with typos ><
yea i had a little difficulty with potter's clay 'cause i had the class early in the morning so I was never focused >< wish i did better in that class
sure thing :D you've helped a lot and I might have to come to you for advice later when i start making mine lol

Holy cow! This is getting REALLY exciting to see develop! I can hardly wait to see the finished product! I'm especially curious to see how you're going to do the legs and tail. As well as the impressive amount of feathery fluff this lady has! ^_^
I'm also wondering. How are the luminescent teal-blue markings going to be handled? Will they glow in the dark or something? That'd be a neat effect, if it's possible with this medium. =3

Tail will be moving with a skin coat over it. Natural movement. Legs are to be stilt type things that will give me the digi legs. And raptor claws, yay! The hair is going to be a mixture of hair and feathers to cut down on costs and make it more interesting.
I'm debating with the luminescent markings. At the very least they'll be iridescent paint.

Love how well this is progressing!
If I might ask, do you have any suggestions on how I can learn to do this as well? I've been looking, but I can't seem to wrap my head around doing a 2/3 part mold without it end up having big holes where the material is poured into the cast (as an example, when you cast this for latex(?), where do you set it up to pour the material into the cast from without messing up a visible spot on the mold?)

Heya,
Two tricks you can do; assuming you're dealing with foam latex or silicone or something that's cast rather than layered, you can either pour and then inject it (and have straws pointing up in all the hollows where bubbles will collect - which you later snip off smooth, so do them in discreet places if possible), or you can try overfilling your mould before pushing the final piece into place.
We basically either design our casts to have a flat base (ie, the base of a toy is a good place to do this), or have a place where a subtle seam and a sprue attached can be trimmed off cleanly.
There's no simple resolution to the 'how do I pour stuff in without leaving a big pour hole?' issue - just a few hacks and some ingenuity you can use in planning your mould.

Yeah. It's a sulfur base and silicone doesn't like sulfur apparently, lol. i've been told it's an awful mess.
Thank you. My dragon Millikan is not made of latex or fiberglass or resin. She's just paper clay and foam. Scabrous was my inspiration to make Millikan, I met him one time at a Ren Faire and was blown away! Now I've actually gotten to talk to him, he's awesome.
I offer commissions, but I'm closed currently. Busy and have a couple people waiting for theirs 8I stooopid skool

I currently do not offer masks like this for others yet, the masks I make for others are like Millikan the dragon and Shaard. I am currently closed for masks commissions. Those, when I get a good run of time, take me about a month to complete, depending on complexity.
Thank you!
Thank you!
