Septimus, one of the Arachi Kings and Prince, a slave given to him in return for his assistance in a coup against the oppressive Vespid government.
When Septimus was taken to choose a moth for himself - having a moth slave is a symbol of position in society, and Septimus fancies himself as royalty even among other race - the Arachi chose one of the newest slaves, not yet trained, purely for the color of his wings, body and hair.
While many slaves suffer terribly under the hands of their owners, Septimus dotes on Prince, whose name was given to him by Septimus after he refused to give the Arachi his real name.
Prince is showered with gifts, favored above any of Septimus' subjects and can have anything he wants except freedom.
Prince, for his part, despises Septimus for much of their time together. It has yet to be seen if he will ever accept the life he has and allow himself to see Septimus as more than a tyrant controlling his existence.
