It *is* a bit obscure. There's a bit in The Odyssey where Ulysses, having been gone for many years and believed lost forever, proves to his wife's gaggle of suitors that it he truly has returned by throwing a spear through the loops in the handles of seven axes hung in a row, a feat only he was capable of achieving.
