The weird thing is I don't ever recall seeing a possum in Australia going through the rubbish, though not sure how similar or different possums and o'possums are.

North American possums are opportunistic omnivores and scavengers. That means if they'll rifle around anywhere there might be some tasty scraps. That means you usually find them around areas where a lot of garbage gets dumped, especially if it's an area with lots of restaurants (they throw away A LOT of food each night).
