Here's his description of them: "They live in the deserts of the southwest USA, protecting hikers from lack of water, sprained ankles and dehydration. Legends say they protect the Lost Dutchman's gold. They have bighorn sheep horns, a body of a bear, and the tail of a kangaroo rat. Cholla has a ham radio license, and participates in emergency communications. "

So with this info, I pictured her calling someone on her radio to send for help when she finds someone unconscious.
