Erika McMillan was born to Kurtis and Leena McMillan in 1980's. She grew up in the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Most of her early life was fairly typical, growing up in the mid-sized city. Her life took a turn though, when she was 15, her father took her to the AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh Wisconsin. This massive airshow showed off both civilian, and military aircraft Kurtis, who had been a Captain in the USAF during the Vietnam War, had a passion for aviation even after his retirement from duty, and he shared this passion with his daughter. On that day, Erika made a choice that would change her life. She decided she wanted to become a pilot.
Erika started working hard in her free time, studying and training. She even left her high-school's cheer leading squad to pursue her Pilot's license. After 3 long years of work and many training, on her 18th birthday, she finally earned her Private Pilot's license. Erika was looking forward to getting the next level of certification to become a commercial pilot after she graduated high school. But, at her high school graduation, she met and talked with a recruiter for the United States Air Force, and at his suggestion and recommendation, she applied for the the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs.
The admission was extremely competitive, but the tuition as well as room and board were all paid by the Air Force. To her joy, and her father's pride, Erika managed to get in, and started training to become an Officer in the USAF, as well as studying for a Bachelor's degree in aeronautics. But, everything changed one day, during her 3rd year in the fall of 2001. Like most of America, Erika watched the events September 11th unfold over the news. Seeing this horrific attack galvanized her resolve. She threw herself 100% inter her studies and training, graduating the Academy near the top of her class, with the rank of a 2nd Lieutenant, but she was still just a cadet.
The fun part of Erika’s training started when she shipped out to Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi for her Flight school. The days were long, the training and studies hard, but this stuff was her passion. Hard work, determination, and skill lead her to eventually qualify to fly the F-15E Strike Eagle. A multi-role variant of the F-15 Air superiority fighter. Her first flight in the massive, multi-million dollar machine was one of the greatest moments of her life.
Following her full graduation from training in 2003, she was quickly deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying deep strike missions against key communication, command and control buildings, and other key Iraqi targets as part of the 66th Fighter Wing. She proved herself an excellent combat pilot. She also became good friends with the WSO’s (Weapon systems officers) she flew with in her F-15E. Erika’s home base was Eiersdorf Airbase in southern Austria, But she did spend a lot of time operating out of Kandahar when she was flying short notice Close Air support missions.
It was during her time flying in Iraq that she was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
In 2009, Erika started flying in Afghanistan, mostly Close Air Support and precision strikes against Taliban targets. Again her outstanding performance earned her a promotion, this time to Captain. Erika loved flying in the more mountainous country, often making use of nape-of-the-earth flying to get the drop on targets before they knew what hit them.
But as the world changed, so did Erika’s missions. Soon enough, she was promoted to Major, and in recent years has been flying missions against ISIS, delivering strikes against training camps, leaders, and other high value targets.
Erika, having given nearly two decades of her life to the military, is a very different person than when she went in. She used to care almost nothing for the simpler things, like hanging out with friends, enjoying down time, or even just relaxing. She spent all her time working towards her goals, at the cost of a social life. But, she never regretted it, she got to live her dream, even if it was somewhat different from what she thought she wanted growing up. Now, older and a bit wiser, Erika has started to take time to enjoy life. While she has no plans of retiring before she at least makes Colonel, she is a lot more laid back when off duty than she used to be. While by no means slacking off, she has started to take as much time as she can to enjoy life, taking leave and days off much more than she used to. She still loves her job, and loves flying. Recently she purchased a private sports aircraft, the ICON A5, so she can enjoy her favorite thing even off duty.
