Name: Mrithun (Hindu name meaning Made of Earth; Lord of Death)
Age Unknown
Gender Unknown/Non-Gender Binary
Biography: The physical construct and manifestation of nature, this creature is the lord of rot and decay. A unique hybrid of the native american legend known as the Wendigo and the mobile and sentient tree-folk known as Ents, Mrithun is of his own classification - an Ochidrot (An Orchid of Rot aka Mushroom; delineated from his appearance of decayed, dilapidated vegetable matter and several specie of Fungi which actively grow and erect from its body).
It feeds upon the death of nature and natural life, absorbing the rotten and decayed tissue of plant and animal life to sustain itself. When in the presence of dead matter, it projects rhizomes which burrow into the remains and emits digestive enzymes to further speed the process, turning the object to a black oil like, decayed substance which it absorbs. While not a lethal threat to living tissue, it can still cause toxic conditions in a living subject with direct contact; common symptoms of contact with the creature involve: Nausea, Dizziness, Lethargy, Cold Sweat, Involuntary Shakes, Migraines, Confusion, Itchy or Irritated skin, and/or hallucinations.
Although rarely directly seen, it's presence is experienced and manifested worldwide, with only direct manifestations of the creature itself seen by the chosen few who are of pure of heart and who are spiritually connected with Mother Nature. The process of decay and destruction of nature is heightened with it's direct presence, often poisoning vegetable matter around it to sustain itself and grow. No manner of organically constructed weaponry or offensive tactics are effective against Mrithun as it is able to quickly decay and utilize whatever strikes it.
It is commonly seen as a skeletal form of what was once known as a saber-toothed feline, an ancient and fossilized being resurrected from the earth. It's body is more commonly consisted of the organic matter it absorbs depending on it's environment. Common sightings include it to be made up of rotted, dead trees, vines, stumps, thorns and woody growth. But it can be constructed primarily of mud, sand, gravel or black, dead moss or other dead tissue depending on its surroundings.
It has a blackened heart in the center of it's rotted core, signifying it has some sort of animalistic sentience. It is unknown if it's mortal as so very few have encountered it. Those who are unlucky enough commonly cite the smell of rotten compost or an earthy fragrance. It's lowly growls and snarls can be heard echoing, seemingly from nowhere before it manifests. During manifestation it is common for the atmosphere around the location to darken, shadows move and centralize upon it's location until becoming pitch black. During this time, unaware of the victim, it begins to assemble itself using various decaying tissue and matter surrounding the location until fully formed. The skull is hollowed and it's white, pupiless eyes are the first witnessed sightings before it steps from the black veil to reveal itself.
It's movement is slow and controlled, the rhizomes protruding out upon the ground to absorb the rotten tissue in it's environment. Once it sees a living entity it will try to induce fear with snarls and howls, and drooling black oily rotted tissue from it's jowls. Those wise enough to flee will not be pursued, those who are foolish enough to stand their ground will face their worst nightmare.
A new character design I developed with a few ideas and a little help from a few friends (you know who you are). I wanted a more sinister character, completely different from any of my others. This creature here I found to be a good antagonistic being for my sona Hunter. Hunter is all about purity and the preservation and balance of nature, and this thing is completely opposite.
The 'Wendigo' creature is often discussed in conversations and a few of my good friends have characters that are indeed wendigo like or are of similar nature and I thought it would be an interesting concept to sort of blend the wendigo concept with that of something to combat the essence of Hunter; sort of give him something unique to fight against and give him more purpose.
The Ochidrot 'specie' is something I fabricated to try and classify this 'thing' rather than to call it a wendigo or monster or what have you. I figured it would be something unique I can add to Hunter's story and history and add a new dynamic to art pieces I get with him. As I said before in it's biography, this creature changes basic form and construct depending on it's environment, the true ESSENTIAL elements to this creature is the presence of decayed, dying matter, mushrooms, the black heart in a rotten core, the smilodon/saber tooth skull and the pupilless eyes as well as the ungulate hooves.
If you have any questions or comments feel free to comment below. I am open to allow artists to sketch/draw/render this creature and it's name/species in art or stories so long as I am credited in the description.
