The Middle Ender - Sanguine Melancholy
This one came about thanks to a certain mystic minotaur. More about him below. FAAAAARRRRR below...
"My name is Ethan Cormack, but most know me as the Middle Ender. That is the title that obscures my name and seals my fate. Because of it, I am charged with protecting All Ever, bringing an end to chaos and ultimate destruction. I've seen many places and done many things in fulfilling that purpose. Those who know of my deeds alternately praise or curse me and those I fight alongside. I am called savior and destroyer, angel and demon. I have done many things for the sake of saving lives and worlds. Things I regret now, despite the reasons behind my actions.
I've grown weary during my travels. There seems to be no shortage of worlds in danger of collapse, poised to fall prey to the Umbra and be destroyed forever. As one whose purpose is solely to bring suffering and tragedies to an end, it's hard to accept that this journey might have no end. That there will always be another world prepared to fall until we reach the ultimate end - the end of Ever. Yet, that seems to be the case. It's ironic that those of us tasked with bringing suffering and tragedies to an end must experience just that indefinitely. An endless agony...
Thus, I've made a choice. It puts me at odds with my fellows, but I no longer care. I've had enough of this senseless and endless journey. It's time for it to stop. I am the Middle Ender. I am tasked with protecting All Ever and bringing an end to suffering. I am sent to do battle. This time, I will fight for something more important than worlds I have never known and people I shall never know. I will fight for what I believe in. And as for this dreadful chapter that will not come to a close...
I will end it myself.
Even if that means ending all else I have ever cared for."

Some of you may have noticed the title I've given myself on my user page. The idea of an Ender was not born from me directly, but I have permission to use it as I see fit from the creator, my best friend Mike. This character in particular, however, is completely my own creation in every sense except the title he has.
The concept of an Ender as envisioned by my friend is thus - one who brings resolution to conflict, who will fight in any way to end suffering, serving a higher cause or purpose. Between the Mike and I there are at something like four different variants on the theme all bearing the same name - a group of six individuals fighting for some higher cause, whether they be government agents, space age mercenaries, medieval fantasy era swordsmen, or a mix of the aforementioned.
Each Ender bears a direction or position in their title (Middle Ender, Left Ender, Right Ender, Upper Ender, Lower Ender, Lost Ender) which is in no way indicative of rank or prestige. It merely signifies a symbolic role or an aspect of their personality. For example, the Left and Right Enders tend to oppose each other in certain aspects, often going in opposite directions, but with the Middle Ender stands between them and keeps them connected, acting like the glue that holds the group together when it should fragment. The same with the Upper and Lower Enders. As for the Lost Ender... well, he's just errant and tends to disappear somewhere in every tale. *Shrugs*
Several completely independent stories are in the works, all with the same six characters standing in as Enders. Their names, ages, and species may be different, and their pasts & life experiences as characters are completely different, but for all intents and purposes their personalities are the same or nearly so in each tale. Just think of each tale as an alternate universe in which incarnations of these same six people happen to meet and interact.
In my particular Ender story, the Enders are a group of relatively normal furs who begin to realize that their modern world is on the path to total destruction. Despairing at the circumstances, wishing they could do something about it, they are given a choice by a mysterious being - Take on the powers and duties of an Ender, and they'll be able to save their world. But, once they become Enders, they can never return to their home world and time until all the many other worlds in All Ever are safe. Obviously, they choose to take on that responsibility, and are set on a grueling path to bring endangered worlds to salvation so that the fabric of the multiverse remains intact, which means doing a lot of unsavory things for the sake of a greater good that they eventually begin to seriously question. Thus the strange monologue I attached to this picture...
The reason I bring this all up is because I've written one aside in my Ender story that I plan to post, and I'm planning on writing another aside, as well as a main narrative. So, background for y'all. Oh, and I might make more portraits of these furry Ender incarnations.
So, this is Ethan Cormack, the Middle Ender, who I use as one of my fursonas. He's a sad character, plagued with extremely strong feelings and cursed with a path that makes him do what he knows is wrong in order to accomplish something he once thought was good and necessary. But, as he goes along, he begins to question it all, falling even deeper into a melancholy and drawing away from the only ones he can rely on - his fellow Enders, who despite their own doubts press on blindly, hoping for the best...
Okay, now let's talk craft. I like how the picture turned out, despite it being very heavily digitally edited. Ethan Cormack is 1/2 gray wolf and 1/2 brown bear, which I knew going into this drawing would be very hard to illustrate. So, here's how I tried to show it -
Bear characteristics: Muzzle is short and blunt, ears are slightly rounded, tail is shorter than it should be for a canid, build is a little heavy, brown fur in the ear aperture (is this the word for it?)
Wolf characteristics: angular jawline features, the ears just a bit too pointed for a bear, tail just a little too long to be bearish
So here's the big question. Without telling you all that, would you have known that he wasn't just wolf or just bear, depending on which you picked up on first?
Anyway, to the rest. The clothes turned out pretty good. I would have liked to get more texture on the pants, but that was the most I could do without distorting the black lines for the zipper flap. And yes, the shirt sleeves are supposed to be that short. It's not rolled up. They're 1/2 length. Vest texture is spiff, and I was pleased with the rough texture on the backpack (can't decide if it's leather or canvas, but it works). The shine on the katana's sheath and metal pieces turned out amazing, and it wasn't too bad on his metal gauntlet.
I like his sort of determined but depressed look. Exactly what I was going for. Check out the lines in his eye iris. Finally got some soulful eyes! :D I thought that background looked kinda like red blood cells packed in under a microscope. Very cool. Somewhat fitting considering how much blood he's had to spill, which is what causes much of his doubt and confusion. The lighting FX I put in added something I think. Oh, and that's the symbol of the Middle Ender on the medallion on his necklace and floating over to the upper left.
Now you know what I liked. What I was disappointed with? Eh, the color scheme. It's sort of coordinated, but it doesn't have a lot of eye catching interest beyond the green symbols on his sword sheath and his red katana tassels. But, he's not supposed to be a bright happy character, so I guess simple and borderline monochrome is okay for him. I was also disappoint that it took me almost six hours to finish this one picture. GAAAAAHHHH...
Alright, that's enough for this one. Man, what an epic comment. I should get an award for being the biggest blabberer on FA outside of the forum or repsonses to other users.
Oh, one last thing. Thanks is due to
Meanbeard We've chatted it up over the past few about many a thing, including the Enders. He got me inspired to draw this and get started on fleshing out this universe. Thankee much buddy!
Alright, I'm done. Cheers from the Middle Ender, y'all!
