A view from the passenger seat of this 1952 Chevrolet Deluxe is dominated by the chrome trim above the radio. I believe that the radio speaker was hidden behind the chrome. The center-mounted clock is pretty cool, too!

They were tube powered radios, needed a few minutes to warm up properly. You're correct the speaker is behind the chrome grille.
The speaker is actually mounted in the radio housing. The same radio was used in many other Chevrolet models.
I used to work as a bench tech for AC Delco back in the early '80's, repairing radios (back then we actually repaired them) and speedometers. The shop I worked in had a side job repairing and refurbishing vintage electronics. I saw and worked on a couple of these.
The real interesting ones were the early Cadillac radios that had mechanical AM 'seek'.

It's funny I had an 85 Daihatsu Charade, the dash layout was very similar but of course made with vinyl and plastic. Central clock, push button radio, ventilation controls and speaker in the dash :3 Of course the 50's had more style but the general layout of controls hasn't changed much.
