Hackmon rolled around so that he was laying on his belly, head flat on the pillow as he snored peacefully in bed. Aside from eating Max...the night had been relatively uneventful and that left the small white dragon with a restful sleep that would leave him ready for the trials that today would offer. Waking slowly, his eyes began to open up to the light that was filtered through the room's curtains and something started occuring to him...This room wasn't painted orange...was there someone in his room? As the blurryness in his vision started to fade, offering him a clear picture he realized what he was looking at was an orange scaled face, just a few inches away from his own. Blue eyes calmly examining the diminutive dragon. Blue horns curved behind the dragon's head and smaller brown horns decorated it's ears. A full five seconds elapsed as Hackmon, who was just waking up, processed what was going on and suddenly let out a loud roar that shook the bed he was in and he began scooting to the other end of the bed. “Wh-What the hell?! How'd you get into our Bedroom Scav!?”
Scav...or Scavenger as his full name, was an orange scaled dragon, with blue scales running along his belly and acted more like armor plates. His tail behind him was small enough that many confused it for a Koopa tail. He wore nothing except a black belt that kept his swords strapped to his waist. He simply blinked when Hackmon had reacted to his presence. “I used a portal to get in. We received a notification from Max's digivice that you came into contact with something that made a pretty huge blip on it's radar.”
“You don't just barge into someone elses room!” Hackmon had pulled his cape over himself, leaving just his head exposed as he glared at the orange dragon. “I should eat you for trespassing.”
“You're avoiding the issue.” Scav sighed, rubbing the back of his head before pulling a rounded digivice that had been strapped to the backside of his belt. “Come on out Agumon.”
A brief glow emanated from the digivice's screen, followed by orange pixels swirling between the two as the pixels slowly formed into an Agumon that came into being. It took a breath as the materialization was complete and looked up at Scav's face. “You really should have knocked instead.”
“Knowing Hackmon and Max they probably wouldn't have answered. And Max isn't anywhere to be found...I couldn't sense him so I decided to get inside the room to investigate.” Scav rebutted, though no matter what he said, it seemed to just incriminate him even more. No matter what kind of justification he used, he was still breaking and entering...and the look on Hackmon's face proved that.
Hackmon's expression was that of his eyes narrowing, his jaws clamped shut as if he was afraid that he might end up biting the larger dragon's head off if he opened it for even a second. 'Why do they always show up when Max isn't around...' Hackmon grumbled to himself as he listened to the two of them banter. This was why they locked the door in the first place. It was for this dragon specifically...Sure Scavenger meant well, he was trying to protect and look after Max. He was also doing his job as an investigator for the tamers guild...But the way the dragon did his job irked the rookie.
Hackmon was taken out of his train of thought as the Agumon pointed an accusing finger in his direction. The accusation that came next made a sweat drop form on the dragon's face. “That's enough of that! We caught traces of Max's digivice's signal coming from this room. Is Max in the bathroom or something?!”
“Your imagination likes to run wild doesn't it...” Hackmon rumbled with an annoyed look on his face. He'd hopped out of the bed and started stretching his body out. “Max isn't in the bathroom...He's right here.” Hackmon sat upright and allowed his two guests to take a gander at his stomach, which thanks to his meal last night had gained a more rounded appearance. Though he wasn't chubby...not yet anyway. He pressed a clawed hand over his belly and suddenly belched out the pokegear that Max was known to carry, now covered in drool and the acids of his gut. “The information you want is inside his digivice there. But you'd better wait until he comes back...” Hackmon's eyes narrowed as his voice grew threatening. “I'll have to eat the two of you if you violate his privacy.”
“Scary...” Scav remarked, watching as his Agumon partner suddenly clutched his leg. “Don't worry...I'm not going to look through it...especially not when it's covered in your acids.”
Hackmon's response was to simply roll his eyes. He approached the pokegear laying on the ground and rubbed it clean with his cape before a bright light filled the screen. A loud pop was heard and Max had formed right in the bedroom...under Hackmon that is who was now sitting on top of him. “Great...I spend the night digesting in your stomach and now here I am as your seat.”
“Right...sorry about that. I was trying to clean your poke gear for you...” Hackmon coughed once and leapt off Max's back so that the boy could get back up to his feet. “Uhm...I hope that it wasn't TOO hard to get to sleep for you.”
Rubbing his head, Max had grabbed the digivice from Hackmon's claws and checked to make sure it was undamaged...it was stewing inside of the dragon's gut all night after all. A quick check made sure no circuits were fried...no damage to the metal and he allowed himself a breath of relief...His uncle wouldn't round on him for being careless. He finally brought his attention to Scav and Agumon who were standing patiently in front of him. With a sigh, Max tapped on the screen of his poke gear and a miniature hologram of the crest of courage appeared between them. “We found this just outside of Blackthorn city...I hadn't had a whole lot of time to run through scans of the area since Hackmon ate me as soon as we got settled in.” Max turned his attention briefly to Hackmon who looked away, cheeks red as Max pointed out that bad habit of his. “Anyway...I couldn't complete the scans because of that but it looks like they continued to run even while I was churning away into dragon fat. The source seems to be coming from here.” He swiped the hologram away and revealed a detailed map of Blackthorn city. He pointed upward to a cavern, up north. “It's called the Dragon's Den...word is that unless you defeat Claire the gym leader, you won't be allowed entry. My guess is whatever digimon created that crest is holed up inside the Den.”
“That shouldn't be a problem...” Scavenger said to himself as he rubbed his chin. He turned his attention up at Max and smiled. “I can bypass the security by-”
“Think for a moment.” Hackmon rumbled, pointing to the cavern with his claw. “You could bypass it but unlike us...the locals won't take too kindly to the intrusion if you're caught. And you'd stick out like a sore thumb given you're not wearing any clothes and your orange coloration is like a beacon to anyone exploring the cave.”
Max nodded, understanding Hackmon's views and immediately collapsed the map view of his poke gear and was about to strap it to his belt when he realized it was still in the Nurse's care so he slipped it into his jacket pocket. “We'll do this by the way the city has it set up...It'll keep us out of hot water and besides, I'm here to challenge Clair anyway. After I beat her, we can move into the Dragon's Den and continue our investigation.”
“Alright...” Scavenger conceded. “But remember that she uses dragon type pokemon. She won't be an easy one to beat.”
The rest of their preparations for the day were about as normal as they could get. The four of them walked out of the room that Max had been given for their stay. He picked up his belt along with the poke balls from the nurse after she informed him that all of his Pokemon were back up to full health. Now that he had everyone back, he set out for some grub from the center's cafeteria so that everyone would have the energy they needed for the days work.
It wasn't long before the four of them made their way to the Blackthorn city gym. Compared to the gyms that they'd traveled to prior...this one looked so normal...It was a large building that could have been an institute of some kind. “We don't have time to be admiring the scenery...” Max reminded himself out loud, and with Hackmon's help, started pushing open the set of double doors to reveal a spacious battle arena that was standard for gyms of this type.
Standing in the middle of the gym's arena was the blue haired gym leader that was known throughout Johto as Clair the dragon tamer. She looked in the direction of the gym's entrance and a knowing smile crossed her lips as she glanced at his blonde flowing hair. “You must be Max! Bellows told me you'd be coming.”
“Bellows?” Max hadn't taken two steps in before he started recalling who Bellows might be before his eyes widened. “You mean Rex Bellows? The gym leader of Bellows island?”
“Actually I meant-” Clair was about to answer when the door to one of the gym's guest quarters opened into the main hall.
Scratching his head, a young trainer stepped out towards the ring, a Charmeleon accompanied his side. The trainer had bright red hair that shimmered in the air as if it was fire. He wore a black T-shirt with the fire energy symbol popping in the background along with a set of blue jeans that covered up his lower body and was topped off with a pair of red sneakers. “It's about time you showed up...I was worried I'd have to make my next delivery before getting to see you.”
Max's eyes bulged out, a bright smile on his face. “Flaare! I should have known it was you!” Max started running towards Flare and wrapped an arm around his neck to give him a noogie “I haven't seen you in a couple years! How have you been?”
“Aaaah! Watch the hair!” Flare was grinning from ear to ear, and suddenly grabbed Max in a headlock of his own. “I've been busy. Bellows shipping is picking up speed.
It took a few moments for Max to pull away from his friend and grinned just as wide. “So then you're here for work? I guess there isn't a whole lot of time for the Johto league for you now huh?”
“Oh I'm already qualified.” Flare took out a case of badges and revealed he had 8 new badges lined up in two rows. “We can catch up later. You got a gym battle to deal with right?”
Max blinked, looking at the badges before nodding. “Yeah you're right. Wait you beat Clair? Mind doing a favor for me?”
The sudden request made Flare blink. Max wasn't known to really ask favors, it wasn't in his nature but after everything they'd been through, plus the nature of the request, he gave Max a thumbs up and smiled. “You got it. Meet us up there once you've finished up here alright?”
Max could only nod in reply as Flare had already started running out, with Charmeleon following shortly behind, giving Max a small bow, and a light nudge on the leg before rushing after his trainer. When Max turned around, Clair was already standing right next to him, holding out a poke ball in her hand. “Three on three sound alright with you kid?”
“That sounds perfect. Don't hold back on me!” Max cried out as he ran to his side of the ring and got ready for whatever Clair was about to throw his way. He wasn't entirely surprised when the first pokemon she called out of her ball was a Gyarados, which hovered slightly above the ground given it's flying type nature. “Hmmm...a water and flying type...alright then let's go!” Max grabbed one of the balls on his belt and tossed it out into the ring, waiting as the flash of light formed into a Jolteon.
“ohh, a Jolteon. I guess that would be the smart first choice.” Clair remarked, before becoming more professional. With flair she lifted her arm forward towards Max's Jolteon. “Ice fang!”
“Dodge it and counter with a Thunder fang!” Max cried out, watching as the Gyarados moved with a speed that nearly frightened him as it charged right at Jolteon, thankfully his pokemon was just a bit faster because the Gyarados's jaws only caught a clump full of dirt just a few feet away from where Max was standing, while Jolteon had managed to latch onto the Gyarados's back and chomp down on one of it's scales, the flashes of light as electricity was pumped into the massive serpents body testified to the intensity of the attack, but after 10 seconds of the abuse from the small canine pokemon, the electric canine was forced off the Gyarados's body with a rough shake of it's body. Thankfully, the Jolteon landed smoothly on it's feet.
“Hydro pump! Let's go!” Clair commanded, with the Gyarados setting up for the attack but it suddenly stopped midway as a small spark of electricity coursed over it's body. “Paralysis?!”
“Alright let's finish this up with a Thunder shock!” Max called out, which got a barking response from the Jolteon as it discharged another round of electricity towards the Gyarados, not letting up on the assault until the Gyarados fell flat on the arena floor, swirls in it's eyes to indicate a knock out.
“Gyarados is unable to battle.” The referee announced, almost having gone unnoticed as they usually do since they stand in the background between the arena.
Clair let out an explosive sigh and recalled her Gyarados into it's pokeball. “You got lucky with that paralysis you know. But I won't let you get off that easy!” with that, Clair was already throwing her second ball into the air, revealing what was to be a Dragonite at her disposal. It roared out a challenge and bore it's eyes into the Jolteon's as if daring it to get closer.
Speechless, Max stared at the Dragonite before he recalled Jolteon back into it's ball, a fierce determination on his face as he grabbed the next pokeball from his belt and tossed it into the air. Coming out of it was the pokemon he had started his journey with. Bulbasaur stared up at the Dragonite and defiantly held his ground. “Alright Sol...Leech seed!”
“Leech seed?” Clair asked, looking a bit dumbfounded as the Bulbasaur shot a few seeds at the Dragonite, latching around it's stomach before vanishing. Half a second later the Dragonite glowed bright red as the seed took it's effect and sapped some of it's strength. “Fire punch let's go!”
It didn't take long for the Dragonite to get going, it's arm glowing red as it's paw pulsed with flame and tried to land a hit at Sol, but the small grass time was nimble, and dove to the side to avoid the impact, a big grin on it's face as another sapping effect from the Leech seed took more of the Dragonite's energy from it. “Alright Sol, vine whip!”
Two vines shot out from the small plant pokemon's bulb and wrapped themselves around the dragon type's arms. It looked as if Sol was trying to drag the Dragonite down as another outburst from the seed took effect and it was in that moment that Sol was able to pull Dragonite down onto it's belly, it's teeth clenched from the impact. “Razor leaf!”
“That's enough Dragonite, Wing attack.” Just as Sol was preparing the razor leaf attack, the Dragonite moved with breakneck speed, it's wings glowing as it charged right into Sol, the wings hitting their target and knocking Sol back, almost out of bounds. “Roost!”
“Roost?!” Max watched the Dragonite's eyes close, the red glow of the leech seed disappearing with a brilliant white glow of recovery. All the damage that the Dragonite had sustained prior had now been recovered! “Come on Sol! We need to get back up!” He encouraged, watching as the Bulbasaur struggled to get back on his feet. It took a moment but Sol was back up and ready to fight, if not severely winded. “Alright if prior attacks won't work, let's try sleep powder!”
Sol was already preparing the sleep powder as it spread throughout the ring. Neither of them expected the Dragonite to blow them away however as Clair commanded it to use Twister. The intense winds cut at Sol, making it difficult for the saurian plant to remain standing for much longer before his body gave out. He fell to the ground exhausted, his battle was over.
“Bulbasaur is unable to battle! Dragonite wins!” The ref annnounced, waving the red flag that indicated Clair's side as he did so.
“So now they're one even...What's Max going to do now?” Hackmon asked himself, sitting on the bleachers with his cape covering up most of his body. “Come on...why not just use it now?”
Max grabbed Sol's poke ball and recalled him. “Don't worry, you did great given your opponent! We'll win this for sure.” Max shrunk the ball down and set it back on his belt before calling Jolteon out once again.
Flare was stepping into the Dragon's den for the first time, along with Charmeleon...His request from Max was a simple one. Apparently there had been a digimon signal that lead into the Den but they were unable to get inside until they cleared the gym's trials. Thankfully, Flare had already received his badge and was free to enter as per the rules of Blackthorn city and it's gym.
He was grateful that he had Charmeleon as a partner as well, because the cavern, while it did have some light, was still hard to walk around without stumbling into a rock or a wall. Charmeleon made this a bit easier with his natural tail flame.
“So we're here to look for the source of the signal...Any idea what we're going to be looking for?” Flare had turned his attention down to Charmeleon, though he couldn't understand the fire lizard. Max had a knack of understanding wild pokemon language but to everyone else, what they said was mostly a mystery. He'd been so caught up talking with Charmeleon as they passed through the caverns, he didn't realize in one unlit part of the cavern...two sets of eyes turned their attention towards the pair. As they stepped closer into the light, one of them had a blade like horn jutting out of it's helmet, the tip glinting somewhat in the dim light, while the other could be faintly seen wearing a fedora on it's head. Looks like whoever it was that Flare had been sent to tail...was tailing them instead.
Jolteon jumped from place to place, as he avoided the Dragonite's fire punch. It seemed to be the opening move for Clair for any challenger. And Max figured why too...since it was such a physical attack, it allowed you to more accurately gauge your opponents fighting style. He'd fell for it hook line...The thunder fang maneuver wouldn't work as it did before either. Clair was too weary of that. “Guess we have no choice...Discharge!”
Jolteon shut it's eyes as it started charging up a large body of electricity into it's body and let it out as a large explosion that started filling up the ring. It seemed to do the trick in that it caught Dragonite in a fit of electricity. A second later the red zapping effect of the leech seed prior had taken another dose of energy from the dragon, transferring itself to Jolteon, and another burst of static around it's body indicated that once again, Clair's pokemon had been paralyzed.
“This is getting out of hand...Dragon rush!” Clair shouted, the Dragonite's eyes narrowing and almost looked as if it had gained a reddish tint as it charged into Jolteon, it's paralysis temporarily forgotten as it slammed violently into the canine pokemon and sending it sprawling ten feet away. As the Jolteon staggered to get back up on it's feet, Clair ordered another Roost so that Dragonite could restore it's lost health once again.
They were just going in circles...They needed a way to end this indisputably and so Max called Jolteon back into his ball. “Take a rest...I'll need you later.” Max then grabbed the last ball for his strategy and called out a Tyrannitar! The massive pokemon roared as it was released from it's confines and stared over the Dragonite. “Alright Tyrannitar...Hyper beam!”
The large Tyrannitar growled as it started gathering energy into it's jaws before shooting a large hyper beam at the Dragonite's stomach, the force of which sent it flying into the opposite end of the gym and falling to the floor as a small pile of rubble began to pile over it as the attack had damaged the wall from impact. The Dragonite however was still holding on as it got back up to it's feet. It was about to set itself up for another roost attack but another zap from the leech seed from the beginning of the match made it loose it's concentration, regaining it just in time as the Tyrannitar charged right into it using his shoulder, knocking out the Dragonite for good this time.
“D-Dragonite is unable to battle! Tyrannitar is the winner!” the ref was clearly shaken by the force of the Tyrannitar's attacks, but tried not to let it get in the way of the battle.
Clair was quick to recall her pokemon and smile cross her lips some. “You're serious. I bet it was hard not to start off with that behemoth huh?”
“A good trainer never reveals their hand unless they're in a pinch.” Max gave his head a few taps with a finger.
“Hmmm...you make a good point kid. Well then I guess I'll have to let out my final pokemon.” Clair tossed her final pokeball into the ring, revealing a shiny Druddigon. It glared in Tyrannitar's direction, neither of them moving. The trainers both knew this was going to be an interesting match up...especially since neither one of them had the type advantage..at least none that the opposing team knew of.. “I hope you're ready kid! Night slash let's go!”
The dragon type pokemon roared as it cleared the distance between itself and Tyrannitar, it's claws glowing a dull black as it swiped at his foe's belly. Tyrannitar staggered somewhat, but otherwise the attack didn't seem to do much damage. “Grab that dragon's paw and use Ice fang!” That seemed to catch Clair a bit by surprise, as the rock type pokemon grabbed ahold of Druddigon's paw and bit into it's shoulder with icy fangs.
The dragon type flinched as it pulled away from the attack. Ice type moves...against a rock type that was definitely unexpected. But Clair wasn't about to give up without a fight. No sirree, she simply pushed forward and commanded the Druddigon forward. “Super power! Let's go!” This time it was Max's turn to be surprised, as the dragon's fists pumped up and started hammering away at Tyrannitar's hide, and with such a high attack ratio it caused the rock type to slide from it's current position...yet aside from a few light cracks on it's gut, the Tyrannitar remained standing, it was even grinning. “What kind of pokemon IS that?”
“Tyrannitar? We came across a Nidoking with exceptional combat strength...no matter what I did, we couldn't get the advantage. Since then, Tyrannitar here has trained his body so that he could counter the ultimate offense with a body with the ultimate defense.” Max explained with a hand to his hip. “It wasn't easy...and some days I thought Tyrannitar wouldn't make it and I'd beg him to stop...But he wouldn't have it.”
Tyrannitar gave a short nod, grinning in Max's direction knowingly. Clair wondered what kind of motivation could force a pokemon to work so hard that they'd risk permanent damage to themselves physically AND mentally. But then she had to turn that question around...and ask what kind of trainer did MAX have to be, for his pokemon to want to work so hard so that setbacks like the one they'd endured once before wouldn't happen again? She sensed a great deal of teamwork and trust between those two and forced a smile of her own. “I have to applaud you kid. But I won't give up just yet! Dragon claw!”
The Druddigon went in for a slashing attack but his claws were easily caught by Tyrannitar this time. With Max shaking his head. “You used Superpower too early...your Druddigon can't hurt us anymore. Dark pulse let's finish this!” Tyrannitar roared as he swung the Druddigon's body into the air and not a second later, fired a large sphere if dark energy right into it's middle, where it was engulfed in the blackness before dissipating. The dragon type fell to the ground with a thud, knocked out from the force of the attack and the impact.
“Druddigon is unable to battle! The victory goes to Max Smithy and Tyrannitar!” The ref announced proudly, if not still shaken.
Clair stood silent...wondering just what happened there. If Max knew so much about the pokemon and their moves natures then why is it taking him this long to come her way. Shaking away that thought, she slowly walked over to Max's side of the arena. “Max, you coming to the gym makes me glad that I became a gym leader. You learn so much about the trainers that aspire to become champion, and what they're pokemon are willing to do to aid their trainers in that goal. You obviously treat them like they're your family, and they trust you with their lives...YOu beat me today so I'd like to present to you this Rising badge...but I'd like you to go visit the dragons den first...Normally a trainer is sent on a pilgrimage within the Dragon's den to prove that they're worth the Rising badge but lately there have been odd things happening in there. Many odd creatures, some not even pokemon have begun to pop up in there. Seeing your battle prowess I'd like to ask you to go in and investigate these odd happenings. I'd do it myself...but my pokemon aren't in any condition to do any sort of thing now.” She remarked with a silly smile.
“Of course...We're about to go there anyway. Flare was on his way into the dragons den to help with that investigation, so it's about time we went down there to lend him a helping hand. But wait...why was Flare allowed to go in...if he already has the badge?” Max asked, looking a little confused as the thought suddenly crossed his mind.
“Bellows gym works with our own gym...we help one another since our ultimate goal is to protect pokemon. Because Flare is Rex's son he is offered the same courtesy as his father
“Oh I get it now...” Max watched Hackmon hop out of the bleachers, and waved to Clair as he started walking out of the gym. “Alright. We're going now! I'll let you know if we find anything!” Max called out, making sure to recall Tyrannitar before finally leaving the building.
“So now we're going into the Dragon's Den? Are we sure we should even do that with your pokemon wounded?” Hackmon asked, looking a little skeptical as they started making their way up north, they were wasting no time in their job it seems.
“I'm worried about Flare. He may have earned 8 badges but he's also known as the Firecracker trainer...he's liable to get into trouble without even meaning to so I'd like to get there and help him out.” Max explained, already seeing the lake that made up the entrance to the Dragon's den and took a deep breath...they were about to dive right into the source of the digimon appearances in the area, and he hoped that they weren't biting off more than they could chew....
