My tiefling bard, Nierys.
Story:
Nierys was born in Westgate. Her mother was a barmaid working at a pub on the docks and her father was a pirate who frequented the establishment. He was also a tiefling. She grew up on stories of his exploits at sea, though she only met him occasionally as a child. Despite their sparse interaction Nierys loved the harrowing tales he told her and had a secret longing to join him and travel the Sea of Fallen Stars.
From a young age she played in a small troop of musicians with her older human half-sister and three other players. They would give shows on the street and split the collective earnings at the end of the day. Nierys had a penchant for singing even then and noticed her words could influence people, or at least they seemed to. She worked to improve her bardic ability and used it as a means to garner more money from their audiences without anyone being the wiser.
When she turned 17 her father returned to port and seeing her capabilities offered to take her with him. Her skills could be of great use in his adventures, although the captain of his ship would have to agree before she could come aboard. She accepted without hesitation and when their ship disembarked she was aboard it.
Her life as a pirate was not quite as glamorous as her childhood fantasies had made her believe it would be, but on the whole she enjoyed it. Keeping entire villages enraptured long enough for her fellow pirates to invade and steal away all the valuable goods they could carry was invigorating and more often than not left few people, if any, injured or dead. However, her life on the seas was not without violence and in more than one occasion she aided her crewmates in more violent acts of pillaging, but only in cases where her thrall had failed.
Her father was killed during one of their visits to the Pirate Isles, cut down during a petty bar fight; Nierys was 24 when it happened. She continued to travel the seas well into her 30s, but as she neared 40 decided her life had had enough excitement. She decided that her final decades should focus on giving back more than taking (but still a little bit of taking) and she had a renewed desire for adventure over the lands of Faerûn beyond the Sea of Falling Stars.
She returned to Westgate as a starting point. Her mother had passed away some years ago but her sister still lived there with her wife, children and grandchildren. After staying with her for a short time Nierys set out west, away from the Dragon Coast and on to adventure.
