Hey, at least it still works. It sounds to me like the thermal compound got disturbed (probably nearly seperated the two interfaces) when it fell. That would be my guess. Sorry to hear of the unfortunate event :/
As far as backwards compatibility goes, I do not believe any of the PS3 Slims has the feature. Its actually been gone for a while now. The only PS3's that supported backwards compatibility were the 20 gig, 60 gig, and the older 80 gig. A good indicator was that the PS3's with backwards compatibility had a chrome trim, the exception being the 20 gig. Going deeper into it, it was only the 20 and the 60 gigs that had complete hardware emulation of the PS2, whereas the 80 gig had only software compatibility, which meant it was hit or miss for some games. I could be wrong, but as far as I know those were the only PS3 units to support backwards compatibility. The upside is that the new price for PS3s is 300 dollars, and the PS2 dropped a while ago down to 100 dollars.
I hear ya though, I'd go crazy too if i couldn't play any of my Armored Core games D: I can't get enough of Armored Core: For Answer.

In all honesty I had a lot of trouble too when I tried to convert from the "veteran" style control scheme over to the new style. They pretty much forced us to adapt to it, much to my displeasure, but after playing it for a couple hours, I quickly picked up on new control scheme. A lot of my friends say I was a bastard in AC3, now no-one wants to even play against me in AC:FA.
I also enjoy the fact that they made blading a viable attacking method in AC4 and For Answer, I'm just not fond of the whole "teleport" glitch associated with high-speed blading (the type of blading I do). Its unfair, which is the reason why I switched from dual-blading to a Single Blade-Machine Gun loadout. Assault Armor is neat too, its just too bad they nerfed it in the latest regulations.
