Taniger is of Irish and English descent. In the 1860's he did some traveling in the East on his way back from the Perry expedition in Japan. While traveling he was given the amulet as a good luck charm.
The real life story is a little less exciting. I picked up an amulet baring that symbol while traveling and have since worn it and Mandarin collar shirts for nearly every formal event. I dangle my shiny object in the face of society and its flat boring ties!
