wanted to try do something not furry related. been a while ^^'
EDIT: pretty please, dont tell me it looks like something you have seen in some cartoon or anime. i drew this totally out of my imagination and it just makes me feel like you trying to say i copied it. thank you ^__^;;

Uh, well, people are going to make those comparisons whether you like it or not, man. It's kind of unvoidable. Even if you did pull this design "totally out of your head," it DOES look highly anime-inspired. Heck, it looks almost EXACTLY like some of the mech enemies you fight in the Xenogears/Xenosaga series. That doesn't mean people are accusing you of ripping anything off though. But, whatever. >_>
well see it from my point of view, i worked hard trying to come up with something original (as im well aware that there are alot of original mechs already out there) it took me all night trying to get it right and be something i think is cool and unique and excited to post it to see if people will like it, only to say its nice but it looks like something they have seen before. so i feel like, oh. but what ever
Well, now you know just how difficult it IS to come up with something original in this day and age. Even if something seems totally unique in your eyes, it's likely going to look similar to something else to other people. This goes on in virtually every genre of entertainment -- writing, movies, video games, art, et cetera. Heck, I've even witnessed movie/game reviewers whine about other people "copying their style." How bloody ridiculous is that? =P
considering the fact that literally hundreds, if not thousands, of people are going to look at your work--and love it--whether they think it's totally original or not, i really don't think you have anything to complain about.
consider also that it is really, truly, absolutely impossible to come up with anything at all and call it "completely original." everything you or i think is influenced by the experiences we've had and the lives we've led. unless you have spent all of your life inside a cardboard box, never seeing, hearing, tasting or touching anything of the world you live in, then you are going to be influenced by the work of others.
don't hate it; love it. cherish your ability to synthesize and integrate all the wild and chaotic images and ideas that flood your conscious and unconscious minds, and produce from that flux a thing of beauty.

Know what you mean there, but it happens to us all in one way or another.
I'm not an artist, but I design electronic circuits. It's quite upsetting, in a way, to spend hours working out how to do something, show someone else, and have them say "Oh, So did you modify XXXX's design for this?".

The only reason they really do it is because the particular style either reminds them of one, or a fusing of two characters from some of their favorite animes, thus making them like the character and art style even more. But yes, this particular character is sweet, the hands and the head design are my faves. As for me I'd just be happy with someone saying "HEEEEEEYYYY! Look at that! You can draw...." :P
Wow! It looks awesome :)
An interesting combination this angel/mecha hybrid ^^
Also like how ,unlike most mecha's I know, it actually has more functional/flexible hands in design, and then he doesn't even physically holds his weapon in hands either :p
Really love the bone like structures in it ^^ It's soooo cool!

i loved the whole series...got WAY too into character...it really only works the first time, but if the first time you play it, you play all the way through all the games continuously, theres a little part of you that forgets these arent real people in real palces, its all just a game...a very small part as its a rather weak illusion, but it is there...alot of it is the reactive email... i also kept thinking "why does cool stuff like this never happen in the real world?"...also spent the entirety of my brief time in wow looking for something nifty like glitches or unusual breaks...never found any...it made me sad...
....also, it kinda resembles the thingies from evangelian, an anime i never watched and never felt an urge to, but have seen art from..

Very pretty. I love the quasi-biblical references, the angel that guards the gate to the garden of eden. I half expect the sword to be on fire, but a magnetic weapon crackling with energy works just as well.
Also love the halo generator. It's an angel (or at least 'holy technology'), of course it's going to have a halo!

GEE THIS REMINDS ME OF THAT THING I SAW WHEN I PEELED ALL MY FLESH OFF...
Seriously, is it so hard to understand why an artist wants their creations to be appreciated for themselves, not for how many different other things you can compare it to?
I really do like the skeletal appearance it has.

It's nice to aim for originality, but at the end of the day we pull from what we know. It's the whole idea of imagining a colour you've never seen before. You just can't. You can think of a colour that evokes many mixes of what you know, but beyond that.. no. Same sort of thing. Our ideas come from our experiences, we're shaped by what we know. It's understandable to aim for uniqueness, but there's nothing wrong with seeing similarities..
There is when people repeatedly focus on what something reminds them of instead of looking at it for what it is. Unless the artist/author has deliberately tried to evoke something, it demonstrates the inability of the viewer to look for the distinctions, differences and subtleties that make something different. Latching onto 'Oh it reminds me of blah' without calling out and appreciating the distinctions is one of the most vulgar forms of affective fallacy. Neither criticism nor appreciation should end in impressionism and relativism.
Oh please.
We can comment on art for a reason. Art is about creativity. Are you -really- going to tell people what is an okay reaction to what you see? Are you that arrogant? You don't know the extent of what a person feels about an art piece, so stop acting as if you're wonderfully omniscient. This is FA. It's a community. People see different things. Who are you to tell them what they should and should not see in a piece? Let people respond to art that moves them in the way they want.
That's what it's all about, isn't it? If anything, an artist should be happy that someone comments. That means they felt some sort of strong emotion about the piece, strong enough to take that and put it in words for everyone to see. That says a lot. You don't see many comments on beginners work, because it doesn't prompt such a powerful emotional response.
Don't look at people with such negativity. People's responses have some good points, and they're all inspired by people's reactions to an artist's piece.
The ability to recognize similarities and common links between artistic pieces is demonstrative of one of the most intellectual of human characteristics: seeing patterns. Afterall, that's one of the foundations of mathematics, and that plays a role in virtually -everything-.
Furthermore, people typically develop strong bonds with things they enjoy. If someone remembers a specific not key to a story (Ie: physical traits) from something, chances are they liked it. So when people make comments like "reminds me of", consider the fact that they may very likely be expressing a tacit feeling of approval. It brought back memories of something they liked.

It doesn't take omniscience to be aware that people whose kneejerk response is to compare everything to syndicated corporate pap rather than picking out and commenting on what does make it unique and original tend to wear very thin after a while on an artist who is striving to define their own creative look and feel...Particularly when the artist has explicitly requested that such comments not be made. And it doesn't take omniscience to notice that the artist has requested that, just paying attention, but that is clearly beyond some people.
If all you see in an image is what reminds you of other things, then I repeat, that's your loss. Pattern recognition is a marvelous survival mechanism, but when you ignore the variations in the pattern and assume 'similar' = 'the same' is when you miss the truck bearing down on you. If all we were capable of being creative with was 'what we saw' and not 'what we imagined', then we'd still be at the sharp rocks and untanned hides level of technology.
I'm not going to bother to waste further bandwidth on you, since you (like so many others) clearly missed the original artist's message here where he requested that such comments not be left...and when confronted with my own sardonic restatement that it was something which discouraged the artist, therefore something to avoid, you went into ad hominem name-calling and self-justification. That whole 'Oh, the artist should be happy...' argument is the exact same phrasing used by diverse art-pirates to justify broadbanding other peoples' intellectual property. It doesn't justify them. It doesn't justify you. The artist has expressly said that hearing this crap doesn't make him happy.
So, to turn around your own attack: who are you to tell him what should make him happy?

Yay, you can't defend yourself properly so you'll insult me. Does that mean I get to do the same now? Cool.
Hey buddy. You're saying I assume " 'similar' = the same ". GUESS WHAT! THERES A LITTLE SNEAKY WORD IN THAR! You know what that word might be? REMIND. REMIND. IT REMINDS THEM OF. THEY DID NOT SAY -> THIS IS. They said Gee wiz, this reminds me of. REMINDS. Look up the fucking word. Nobody here has accused the god damn artist of pirating or plagiarism.
And if you're so into details.. You seem to have missed one key one! You lump me (in all your awesome internet tough-guy righteousness) with the people who have posted their observed similarities, and yet neglected to realize that I'm not one of them.
You're marvelous at twisting words into eloquent bullshit though, so I'll have to hand you that.
And I quote "It doesn't take omniscience to be aware that people whose kneejerk response is to compare everything to syndicated corporate pap rather than picking out and commenting on what does make it unique and original tend to wear very thin"
Gee. Let's see. You don't know what's going on in their minds.. You've seen a single line of text.. And yet they MUST have this and this thought alone! For surely, there is no chance of another thought crossing their mind! They didn't think "Wow.. That's pretty cool.. I like the structuring of the piece, and the very concept art style of it.. It's almost anime-esque.. Oh.. Anime-esque... That reminds me of!" No. For you, it's just A->B. There's no way a trail of thought could possibly lead to point B! No ho ho, Mr. White Knight, only you have a tad of intellect on this here community site. Only you can maintain a thought for more than five seconds. God, your arrogance is off the bloody -charts-. It's either that, or you're omniscient. Or you're wrong, which is of course, the real answer..
I'd also like to point out that you've insulted the people commenting with general tones of disapproval and superiority, and yet your observations were comprised of "I like the skeletal structure" Uhhhh.............. Fascinating, dear sir! Bravo! Some keen insight there! I never thought of that! So unique!
As for the accusation of promoting piracy, that's just stupid. Oh, I think an artist should be happy that people like his work and feel emotionally tugged in such a was as to comment -> Pirate? What? Wait.. So if I think that an artist should see more than just the text in a person's response (Which you seem to not do, as evidently everyone is entirely composed of a ten word sentence.... When did we all become stream-of-consciousness writers anyway?) I must be a pirate? Don't fucking misquote me. If you're going to response to anything I say, then I'd suggest reading all of what I've said, instead of the bits that suit your fancy. Maybe that's why you're yelling at these people. You're just picking out what you'd like from their statements?
It's sad that I have to point this out again, but I indeed shall. I didn't go against the author's wishes. I'm aware of what he asked. I thus responded in a way that challenged his words. I think I'm well within my writes to post my beliefs.
And I'll answer your last question with another question (..Kidding). No, but seriously. You're right (Oh jesus, he said I'm right I must win I can leave in peace) that I've no place to -force- an artist into believing something, but that wasn't my intent. I merely attempted to point out another, more optimistic way of looking at those comments. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Go white knight somewhere else, ffs. Let people enjoy the god damn art -however- the hell they want. If you get your orgasms from being an internet tough guy, /b/'s got a place for ya.
I'm interested in whether you'll respond. If you do, you'll be wastin' that precious bandwidth of yours, which you explicitly (And so kindly - I felt all fuzzy!) made clear that you'd rather not waste on me. However, I can't imagine you letting me get the last word in.
Just as a sidenote Zen, so you understand, I fully respect your rights as an artist to request individuals to respond in a certain way. However, this being a community site, I think you'll fully understand that people may well post what they want.
However, let me say this. I've followed your art for quite awhile, and watched it grow into something beautiful. I think you're really honing on your talents. You've definitely gotten a strong handle on your use of shading and glow effect so it works with you, rather than against (As it did a few times.).
I really like the general idea of the piece, as well. It's definitely a new direction (I see no penis! <3) and one I'm quite interested in. I'd like to know how you came up with the mech structure of the individual portrayed (I'm assuming you sketched it out first, but how long did it take for you to do so?)
Overall, a brilliant piece. It's very easily one of my favorite pieces done by you.
One thing, though. Regardless of what it may or may not remind people of, I hope you're aware that your art has for a long time, and likely always -will- retain a uniqueness. It's decidedly professional and yet somehow very approachable. Your style is very distinctive - Hell, when I look at new submissions I can always tell when something is yours even before reading the artist's name below. (:
It's nice to see you exploring other kinds of artwork. I've always enjoyed your scifi work; of course your scifi+Joshua pieces were fantastic, too. Er. anyway...
It's interesting how he (she? it?) can look both so forboding and yet a little fragile. at the same time, like he shouldn't be able to balance on that frame, but at the same time the awareness that he can not only stand, but very effectively wield that weapon of his.
And on a side note, where do you find your fonts!
Neat work!

Oooo, I love seeing mecha in this type of form. (gndams are okay, but the big machine you step into to fight is starting to get over-rated) It slightly reminds me of my favorite game. which the enemies had this white buglike mecha thing called a viriage. The design is really different, but made me really happy to see a different take on it like they did in LOD.
Really nice work!!
Really nice work!!
-the truth is, we're not trying to say you copied it, well at least i'm not. its actually a compliment that matches you up to the art stylization of those respective artists. i wont say which animes [reminds me of a hybrid of two different ones, more by art style than physical appearance] they remind me of though =X
I'm not going to say it looks like anything from any existing anime... but it definitely follows the conventions. And it kicks ass! I could actually see you sparking off some kind of story idea with this and getting a show started. *Grin* You know how the Japanese love to mix mecca and 'christian' ideals and stories into action series... Like NGE, or Chrno Crusade, etc...
Nice work. I'd like to see more.
Nice work. I'd like to see more.
this is freaking amazing work, it's really nice seeing people do a departure from their normal style of art. I really love the design to this 'guy'(?)
and I think i know what the halo is for...
a CUP-HOLDER!!!
think about it, all these bad ass types have no effective means of storing their beverages when they are on a smiting run or something. =3

OH MAN. So incredibly awesome. Please, please draw more of this. This is one of the coolest and most original things I've seen here in a while. o_O I am beyond intrigued.
Was there any impetus in particular that brought about the desire to do this piece? I would love to hear about how you thought up this one!

thanks ndoto ^^ i have always been trying to work on my take of what angels might look (and not the floating baby stuff) i started back in 1997 with the idea that ancient gods of Sumeria and the bible were advanced and that there was a great war before our civilization that almost wiped out humanity. the Garden where the war took place was on a planet between Mars and Jupitar but was totally destroyed (its where the asteroid belt is today is the remains of this planet) humanity fled to Mars and Earth where the war continued until it ended with the destruction of Lemuria and Atlantis and we were knocked back to the stone age to rebuild our lost civilization. :3
You follow one of my obsessions, most do not know the story of Tiamat (the Planet between Mars and Jupiter) or Marduk crushed by Nibiru, claimed to return shortly with the Nephilim or Anunnaki. *claps* Wonderful! I love the piece by the way, I think your imagination has done great justice to the Angels. *Wonders if you know of the temple of Eridu*
Does remind me a little of a few things. I loved Evangelion, so it reminds me of that, but its not similar at all. Evangelion sometimes maintained the human attributes, within small details, exaggeratively, this is a very unique concept.
In much the same way, that should be a compliment. It takes a very creative mind to grasp the physiology of a human body, or bi-pedal, and work their own twist to create a workable sort of 'skeleton', and you've done great, and very unique at it.

Wow... for something from your imagination... pretty similar to 2 things...
Where did you get this inspiration from, because I'm quite interested to know. =D
(similar minds = similar inspirations?)
Anyways, it's pretty similar to SKEITH from .HACK game.
Also, looks "somewhat" similar to Escaflowne and Eureka7... just to let you know.

You know I have really come to enjoy your work. The main reason is this. You are a very versatile artist. When it come to furry ok you certainly have your preference but it always looks great and then you pull something like this out and It's just awesome. I love that about your work that it doesn't really matter What you decide to draw genre wise you always make it look fantastic. Great job.
There is a difference between copying something and being inspired from something, but the only person who knows is you, even if it is in the subconscious something could have had a role to play from your history.
And I'm shocked everybody's saying eva and such... Nobody else is reminded of the Serphs from XENOGEARS in the last area? YOU CHILDREN AND YOUR NEW AGE VIDYA!
It is nice though, kinda makes me wanna get my art out and work on some more stuff that shall never be posted due to never finishing it lol.

Wow amazing stuff I really love the detail of the anatomical bone structure and the face kind of looks like one of the aliens from Independence Day. *Giggles* Or it could be a face mask for a lion's muzzle. ^^ Anyways it is cool and a nice improvement from the one you drew a while back. *Smiles*

You dont like people saying it reminds them of something..
But honestly, the only thing in here that I havent seen while idly watching anime is the feet. Those look really unique to me.
I dont watch much 'mech' stuff though. But people who DO watch it? Mech's all been done before. You're going to have similarities REGARDLESS of what you do, Zen.

Zen, this is possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen you do. I'm not even kidding. I love your work, or I wouldn't be watching you. You come up with some pretty hot stuff, but arousing though it is I don't always see a story behind it.
This deserves elaboration. It deserves background, and more characters if you have them. I'm extremely impressed and while my opinion may not be of any great significance to you, I wanted to express that opinion anyway.

The last thing I would ever expect from you, honestly. I would be very happy if you drew more images such as this; even if that means losing 90% of your watchers due to the whole "LOL MECHAZ = VOLTRONZ N TRANSFORMERZ = NOT SRS" :v.
Seeing as how TONS of people mentioned Evangelion and all (I'm actually kind of glad that series is getting more well-known in the English-speaking world), I'll just say a few things. I really like the organic/mecha design and I also like how it "holds" the lance. As a mecha nut and all, I would be very glad to hear what ideas you had for this; how certain parts worked and how its piloted. Not to mention what inspired this design.
