Due to my current lack of stuff to draw on, I started looking back at some old junk I could finish.
So here's some monkeys and some alligator guy that sorta looks like Wart if he did the fusion dance with Hedonism Bot.

I like parts of it. But when they started putting coins, banana birds, crystal coconuts, ammo, orange grenades, gold bananas...it just got way too excessive, and for me, just adding in a load of ridiculous items to scavenge for to progress isn't really innovating. Just really, really frustrating. I got excited when I heard Rare was making DK64. But we never really got DK64; we really got Banjo-Kazooie 3 with DKC characters, pretty much.
...Jungle Beat was freaking awesome, though. That game needs a sequel.

One bad apple doesn't retroactively make DKC2 worse though. And Jungle Beat is essentially the Antichrist of DKC games, given that the developers were openly disdainful of them - which is why you don't see a single familiar character, enemy or item in Jungle Beat besides Donkey and the banana.
I never said DKC2 was the worst. It's probably the best, though admittedly it took me a while to get used to the dramatic theme change and the different musical style. I've never touched DKC3, though, but I've seen a complete run of it, and it grated my nerves horribly, and the aforementioned DK64 was just another of Rare's "SM64 was pretty awesome, but didn't have enough red coin stars" and trying to progress in it became one of those horrible RPG hand-me-down quests(gotta get the money to buy the weapon to unlock the character to get the money to buy the weapon to open the gate to collect the blueprint to get the banana), and that's totally not the part I liked about DKC.
A lot of people hate SMSunshine; but I think it's pretty good. But if there's one thing I didn't like, it was those poorly implemented blue coins, which really just felt like a cheap way to artificially add more to the Shine Total, instead of, you know, making even marginally fun objectives(also there's that really, really hard secret level that's a total bitch to even get to, thanks to poor water-soluable Yoshi).
I wouldn't consider Jungle Beat a DKC game...maaaaaaaaybe a precursor, as to why he's considered the King on DK Island, or something, but not the same series. I liked it due to the fast pace, and not bogging the fun parts of it down by making me route around the levels looking for random objects. It was just me, DK, and the bananas, running around using a surprisingly well-utilized gimmick controller to beat the living crap out of whatever tried to stop us from being awesome. DK and the bananas were originally the only familiar things in DKC too, you know.

You know, you can run through every DKC without collecting all the extra stuff. I think you're talking about DK64 though? It felt like Mario64 for the most part and was frustrating a lot of times but I never felt bogged down by items.
Btw, if you never played the whole way through DKC2, give it a good run. It's easily has the best gameplay out of the three with the best soundtrack on the SNES. Don't bother with DKC3, it's alright but seemed kinda gimmicky at times and the music wasn't that good, since it was mostly Eveline Fischer's work, while DKC2 was strictly David Wise.

I've 100%'d DKC2. Just, it felt really different when I first played, but I warmed up to the different overall tone of the music(I do still miss DKC's piano melodies, though), and the darker setting. And yeah, you can skip everything...if you want Cranky to berate you for not collecting everything and being a TRUE videogame hero. Thing is, on top of the SMW-esque formula the DKC games generally followed, Rare added in all these extra items, and it really started getting excessive with DKC2. Likewise, B-K took the SM64 formula, and put a ton of other stuff on top of the coins and stars to grab up.
I don't think I'll ever try DKC3 for one simple reason: No Diddy. Rare really over-played that whole "kidnap one of the main characters" plot. Also no Rambi, I think(I'm not really fond of the rhino, but he was sort of a staple. I was ticked when they cut Winky out of DKC2, but I just couldn't believe they cut Rambi). Solid games, I'm sure, otherwise. It's just not that much fun for me to "innovate" by making mini-games and bonus areas a requirement to play all the levels.

There's no more collectibles in DKC2 than SMW or Yoshi's Island though. And the secrets unlocked for obtaining them (new world, levels, boss, ending) made it more than worthwhile. Even then, aside from Cranky letting you know you haven't found everything, you still get a perfectly satisfying ending for not collecting them.
Yeah, like I said, DKC2 isn't bad. It was still moving in that direction, though. I was waiting for Yoshi's island to come up. I love the game to death, but I loathe it for introducing that whole red coin concept to the world...And on top of it they had the gall to HIDE them amongst regular coins, so you sorta needed to get all of them(though, in the SNES version at least, if you look very closely, they actually have a reddish tint. But you have to look REAL closely). The thing about the extra levels in Yoshi's Island was that they didn't offer any sort of bonus "true" ending; they were just extra, harder levels(ironically it seems much, much easier to get 100 points in them). It was still pretty minimal, but still, you have a point there. Regardless, I think Nintendo stayed minimalistic, but Rare decided to start playing it up(You know what Mariokart was missing? Collecting stuff. Hello, Diddy Kong Racing)...but in the very least, they admitted it was pretty ridiclous. Thing is, instead of just laughing at Cranky being all old-school about modern games, I was AGREEING with him.
But seriously, I like 2/3 of the DKC series. Especially DKC2, even though I was uneasy about it at first(the same thing happened with Sonic3). It had what I felt were a few examples of fake/bullshit/BATTLETOADS(which I almost think was intentional since Rare stuck Lockjaw in the game, who's remarkably similar to the fish in the Terra Tubes) difficulty in some places, and when I was younger, I was fine with finally "finishing" it. It has the honor of being one of the few game I've played that has fire world music I actually like, too. Also it has Pirates. And Squitter. And the ability to foolishly risk my extra hit point to get stuff.
...What's the deal with blue balloons, though? Outside of one of the ice levels in DKC, I don't think I've EVER actually seen a 3-Up outside of Swanky's Bonus Bonanza. Is it just me?

I'm pretty sure blue balloons are about, but it's been a while since I've played. Not that they were too neccessary, since it never came close to Battletoads difficulty. Likewise, searching for DK Coins / Bonus Barrels weren't nearly as tedious an affair as the red coin hunt. I guess we just have different mindsets about bonus material - personally I've found few games that have made me feel so good about completing everything. It was a worthwhile incentive for extra content.
Strange that you dislike DKC3 partially for a lack of Diddy, Rambi, Zingers and the like when Jungle Beat had none of that or anything in between. Sure, it wasn't part of the DKC trilogy. Super Mario Bros. technically ended back in the 80s too, but Nintendo continued to maintain the series identity through the decades and rightly so. Jungle Beat was Nintendo's first (and so far only) mainstream Donkey Kong game since Rare's departure, and it ditched everything. Even more galling when that same development team went on to produce Mario Galaxy, which utilized and celebrated all the usual stapes of the Mario series along with the new.
In fact, why chide DKC3 for repeating the kidnapping formula when Mario's done it since the beginning? At least in Country's case it allowed the sidekick to become the star and establish themselves as Donkey's equal. When Luigi and Peach got their own games it was a small novelty; when Diddy and Dixie got theirs it was a series staple. That's a pretty great achievement.

I'm still not sure what exactly I said that made you think I somehow loathe this series. It almost feels like I actually do loathe it, and if I wasn't, I sure am starting to...I almost feel as if I shouldn't have bothered ever drawing these guys at all...Why would I even bother drawing something I hate so much anyways?
So I guess you're right. I'm an asshole, and I should start just ignoring this little hiccup in favor of not provoking your wrath in the near future due to making a tongue-in-cheek comment that nutshell's the subject in the near future(I get enough of that from Luigi and more recently Mother fans anyways). In the meantime...FILL ME WITH YOUR HATE!!! YOUR IRE WILL FUEL MY NEGATIVE ENERGY AND GIVE ME THE POWER OF ONE THOUSAND BLACK SUNS, SO THAT I MAY BECOME A MORE OF A DEVIL-GOD THAN I ALREADY AM!!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAAA~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I borrowed DK64 briefly, and I think I got as far as unlocking Tiny. I still have my suspicions about it actually being BK3 but eventually threw in the DK characters and setting in order to promote more sales. *shrugs*
From what I've seen of DKC3, it's pretty disheartening. They don't even have Zingers in it...
