Once there is white lion who has the privilege of living with nothing to make him feel down. He has everything he needs, a home, a secure bank, food in his kitchen, a good job, fine clothing and a modest red car. He is happy to have such privilege.
Then one day, as he walk down his usual path from work, he noticed something isn't right. He notice a poor kitten walking without a penny in his pocket and a tear trailing down his eyes. His fur was a mess and matted, as he has a tabby pattern on his face. Unlike our white lion who is decorated in the finest silk suit and coloured in branded polos. The kitten wore nothing but a loose raggedy long tunic and oversize shorts that appears to have never washed in decades. The lion wanted to take no actions for the kitten, but with a concern face and empathy in his heart, he approaches to him.
“What's the matter?” Says the white lion.
The kitten spoke, “My family has no money and I lost my way from the woods.” With a shock on his face, the lion then ask whether he needs to find his family. The kitten nodded. He asked the young kitten who he is and where is his home. The young kitten replied, “My name Pete. I stay in the woods over there”. Pointing his finger opposite the road where the woods are. He then ask Pete what his parents are working as. “Mommy doesn't do much because she's missing a leg, daddy has to work harder because he has no job”.
Shocked to hear his news, he offered Pete protection from other strangers and headed with him to safely return to his family. “Do you have any brothers or sisters Pete?” Said the lion, Pete looked at him and replied no.
Stepping into his shoes, he imagines he's the only child in his family with an amputated mother and a struggling father. Must be difficult for him as he discovers that he couldn't even go to school.
Down to the dark, dark woods they venture forth. Through the creeks of the woods snapping below and the shades from the leaves above overpowering the woods, the lion's trousers became to become muddy from the path he had just entered. Needless to say, he is more concern of Pete safety.
Pete stop and recognize the stoned pathway. “I remember this!” Exclaimed Pete, running towards his familiar path. He followed behind him, as Pete cheerfully ran onto the path with a stumbling pitter-patter under his feet. He followed him closely to find themselves at a small broken-down cottage. The cottage was run-down with nailed windows illuminating a small fraction of a light and a door with an annoyingly noisy squeak that never shuts properly. It has a porch with its nails loosely dangling and its surrounding littered with patches of dirt and pest plants. With a gasp on the lion’s face, he was shocked to know such a home like Pete’s would be dangerous to live in.
Outside the porch, and older and messier ginger coloured cat that sat on the porch in disbelieve. Wearing and old dirtied tattered shirt and jeans while wearing a paper-boy styled cap. With his hands covering his face and rivers of tears flowing off his face and crying out orchestrated wails for his child to return.
“DADDDY!” Pete boomed with rejoice.
The older cat suddenly look up, he saw his young kitten running towards him. “Petey!” Says the cat. They both hugged in tears of joy without him being aware the white lion appointment. The lion spoke, “Hi, I found him on the streets and helped him search for you,” “Thank you. Thank you so so so much! I thought I never find him!” His father tearing in desperate hugging his kitten tightly.
“What happened to your family?” The curious lion ask with great empathy. “Our poor habits of choice did this,” the ginger cat answered with great regrets down his eyes. Continuously weeping, he added that he and his wife left all of their entire savings to a bank that has now been bankrupt due to technical wiring and a major fire, burning all records of their savings just before Pete’s birth. Now looking at their condition, he felt heartbroken after hearing the news,
He had heard of this news a few years ago, now that he found Pete and his devastating family, he needs to help them. “Is there anything I can do to help you?” the lion asked. “How? We are broke. And my wife is in bed because she has an amputated left leg,” Pete’s father explained. Pete, now briefly stopped sobbing and says to his father, “He help me find you dad, please let him help.”
His father looked at his son's face in desperate need of action. Then he look back at the lion and agreed to accept his offer. “Before you go, would you like to meet my wife?” Says the cat. “Yes,” the lion agreed with a hint of stutter.
As he enter Pete’s house, he noticed that every step he makes, the wooden floor would creaked, splinters all over the walls no other electronics but a box-shaped TV that doesn't seem to be in best condition. Rooms like these are only lit with just a few dim candles and one old-fashioned lantern on a dining room table alongside some old worn-out chairs and other furnitures. As well as the amount of cobwebs grown all over the ceilings and fixtures. “Forgive us about the mess. We never expected visitors,” said Pete’s father in an upsetting tone. “Oh where are my manners, my name is Jerale.” As the lion pass by the kitchen, he had notice there was no fridge, the kitchen taps are duct taped and leaking and a pile of messy dishes were left on the countertops near an old-fashioned fire heated stove. They walked pass to a closed door and to a bedroom where the door was left to ajar. The grand sound of a woman weeping in grief can behind the door.
Jerale knocks onto the door, “Mary, our son has returned,” he replied with a relieving voice after sobbing. “And we have a visitor coming over,” he open the door to reveal a female feline with calico patterns of white, orange and black speckled around her face. She wears an old beige nightgown with loose lace around her collar and a leg missing at the end of her gown. She was weeping on a large tattered torn bed only to seems shocked to find out her son has returned.
“Mommy, I'm sorry,” wailed Pete.
Mary cried out, “Come here, I missed you!” with that said, he rushed towards his mother and hugged him ever so dearly, sobbing and relieved, they were finally reunited. “Thank you for helping us sir,” Mary cried out in relieved, “No problem, but I can offer you and your family even more help with your struggles,” said the lion.
Mary looked up at him and asked how, “As kind as you are, we are devastatingly broke,” Jerale spoken. The lion thinks for a moment, how is he going to help Pete and his family in this kind of situation, and he is NOT going to give up that easily.
Then he thought of a solution, “Why not work with us Jerale? We are looking for new employees at the downtown main district.” Well I don't have the skill or techniques to work at some mainstream place,” Jerale replied. The lion added more to his offer, “It does offer free internships training, benefits of a bonus salary, paid holidays, and this helps to cover all medical and dental insurances. It can even help lil’ Pete go to school for once,” the little kitten looked at his father, “School?”.
The lion realizes that Pete had never attended any schools before, “Yes, it a place where you get to learn.” Understanding the situation he is in, Jerale has to make a choice. “You’re right,” he replied with a sigh, “There is no reason to let my family suffer like this”. Jerale leak out a tear from his eyes. He, Mary and Pete are in dire condition and sees that there will be nothing but suffering if they continue working endless hour for a mear penny a day.
“Are you sure about this?” the old cat inquire. The lion nodded in a comfortable and reassuring gesture. “Thank you,” Jerale felt reassured about this, “But I’m not going to work dressed like this,” ”It’s alright, I got that cover for you,” says the lion. “I can offer you my suit and tips you need for the job. You can keep the suit as a token of hope”.
Jerale smiled, for a moment he feels like he’s not useless. Mary looked out the boarded up window, “Honey, it’s getting late now. Help me out with Pete here please”. “Oh, You should come back tomorrow. We need to rest for the night,” Jerale sigh as he take Pete to prepare dinner for him. Looking out, the lion did not realize how late it was. “Oh wow! Did not realize how late it is,” the lion replied with a surprise look on his face. Knowing that if he leaves without any source of light he stayed with them anyways thinking it as a wise choice.
“Do you think there’s a place for me to sleep in? It’s pretty dark outside,” the lion asked Mary. “We don’t have much enough bed space for you dear, you can rest at the living room outside,” she replied. The lion nodded, he heads outside to see Pete and Jerale preparing dinner for tonight, even though there is not enough, they still make-do with what they have. Looking at what they have, it’s nothing much but small bowl of cooked rice, a bit of minced meat, and an apple that doesn’t seem to fresh anymore yet its still edible to eat.
“Are you coming over to eat?” Pete ask the lion as he prepares cutleries and utensils for his guess. The lion, who hesitated for a bit, agreed. He wasn’t really that hungry, however, he does not want to be rude to them. He joined them for dinner while Jerale bring out a tray for Mary, the lion almost forgets that she’s an amputee, now he’s wondering how she ended up with an amputated left leg. Once Jerale returned, he ask him, “Mind if I ask this, how did your wife lose her leg?” “She was in a terrible car crash since she was little,” Jerale answered with his eyes looking down. “So, you gonna eat or what?”, the lion said yes nd proceed with his meal. Even though there were forks and knives, Pete prefers to eat his meals with his hands. “Even the manners are a mess” the lion thoughts of it.
After having their dinner, licked clean from their plates. Jerale took the dishes and have them washed with what it appears to be murky water from the basin. The lion rather not ask how long the water been. He showed him where to sleep for the night on the worn down tattered and asked if he needed a blanket for the night, the lion decline.
As he try to lay down and relax on the somehow moist sofa, his thoughts begin to process infinite thoughts on helping this family. Thoughts like “How am I going to help them?” another like “Will they be fine afterwards?” and irrelevant thoughts like “Should've slept on the floor”. Looking at his watch, the time read 11:34pm wondering whether or not he'll have a restful thought as the sound of wood whistle with creeks beneath him. Slowly and surely his thoughts have driven him off to sleep, unaware of it, he slept soundly.
When dawn breaks, the lion lazily opened his eyes only to be spooked by that little kitten! “Ah!” The lion jumped up with such adrenaline. “Pete, don't scare people like that. What were you doing?” the lion questioned him. “I saw little fleas jumping up and down on you,” Pete answered. With a shock on the lion's face, he popped out of the sofa dancing himself off to get rid of the fleas, Pete just simply sees him and laughed. ‘What's with all the noise?!” Mary shounted, as soon as she shounted Jerale appeared. “Morning boys,” Jerale spoke as he lean on the wall with giggles throughout his face. “Don't worry, Pete’s just lying to you. We really don't have fleas!” Jerale explained with enthusiasm and excitement. “So, about the offer…” “Oh yeah, would you like to come with me?” the lion replied.
The old cat agreed. After awhile, they packed up ready for the world. Jerale kissed his family goodbye before heading off to the main street. “How long have your family been staying there?” The lion asked Jerale as they walk through a series of paths. He answered back “Since Pete was born 6 years ago, I'd say 6 years.” Seems like forever to this white lion, “But why there?” “Because my grandparents built that home ever since they migrated from Europe,” Jerale added. Walking down the path, he seem to have notice that his surroundings is pleasant, birds orchestrating, wind running down through the gentle rattling trees and the grass whistling in the field. The lion sees why Jerale and his family moved here in the first place.
As they enter through the main streets where the hustling and bustling sound of people, vehicles and what not filled their ears. Jerale doesn’t seem phased by it, he’s used to the sounds as he was a city boy growing up. As they continue strolling the sidewalk, the white lion noticed Jerale the cat looking around as if taking in the nostalgic times he used to have before bankruptcy.
Once they finally reached to the white lion’s den, he faced to the ginger cat. “All you need is a well-groomed fur, proper suit and an optimistic smile. Look at the interviewer with passion.” As he showed his way to the shower room, the lion prepares to get a proper suit for him. Rummaging through his wardrobe, he finds an old but clean grey suit for Jerale to wear along with a white crisp shirt and plain purple tie, “Seems good enough for the interview,” the lion thought to himself. After about 30 minutes in the shower, Jerale left the room fluffy clean with his fur puffing out insanely, he giggled a bit after looking at him. What’s even more humiliating for the cat is that the bathrobe he’s using has a pink paw print logo embedded on the front of his bathrobe. “Haha,” Jerale added to his humiliation, “Alright, no more funny business. Let’s get to the real task in hand,” said the lion.
After trying on the suit, it seems like the suit fits like a glove to this ginger cat, “Looking dapper there Jerale,” as the lion complimented him. “Yeah, I feel brand new!” Jerale replied looking at his reflection from the mirror. “Now, on to your portfolio,” says the white lion “My what?” Jerale looked in confusion. “Your portfolio. A piece of paper describing who you are and what you do,” the lion added. “Ooooooh, could you help me out?” the cat asked, he agrees to help him out but was told that he is on his own when the interview came. “Alright! Let’s begin,” after a whole hour of creating the cat’s portfolio, they finally have accomplished their goals. Now the most difficult moment, the interview, they both headed to the car, fully dressed and clean, with their heads nodded to each other as the lion starts the ignition, he noticed Jerale’s concern face. He reassures him that everything will go smoothly without a hitch, both now seated and discreetly anxious for the interview.
During the trip they were both silence and calm, once they had arrived to a small but bustling building. The lion handed him a briefcase containing all the essentiel he needs to “A”s the competition. “Wish you luck,” he says before dropping him off for his interview.
The lion parked his car just opposite his workplace eagerly waiting for Jerale to come out and have good news.
After what feels like hours in his red car and looking at his watch reading 2:34pm, he look out to see Jerale actually happily running towards his car for the news. “Great news,” the cat spoke “I have gotten the job!”. The lion gasp with excitement on his face with a wide smile shouting out “That’s amazing!”, Jerale told him that he can start working tomorrow so he needs proper attire at all times. The lion know that he stash a lot of clothes allowed him to take it as a sign of charity. As happy as they are, Jerale needs to break this news to his family.
Two hours have gone past and they finally reach to his family’s home. Mary happened to be waiting for him at the porch wearing the same garment as last night with Pete. He breaks his news to his family and they got excited. The lion has never felt this positive in his life. He bid farewell to Pete, Mary and Jerale wishing them with prosperity as he heads home.
That night as he lay down, on his cozy, cozy bed, he can’t stop wondering if he can do more to his life instead of having to sit here on his job doing what everyone else’s doing. Looking back at it, he decided to change that attitude. He learns that if he isn’t happy, then the rest of the world is not happy.
The following morning, instead of his usual weekends, he decided to join a charitable organization. He walk through his neighbourhood through town council to see if there's any charity going on. He looked through and found a help wanted for a charity that specialize in helping the poor, needy, elderlies, or those who are less fortunate enough. He chose that to help people.
Days has turns weeks, and weeks has turn month. The lion has gone through quite a lot since his old days. He stopped going to his usual workplace in favour of his new charitable workplace that he's proud off. He stops wearing those stupid branded clothes in favour of more comfortable, cheap and heartwarming logo clothes the organization gave him.
Once in a while, he went back to that old home of Jerale to help rebuild his home. Slowly but surely, the house was rebuild wood by wood thanks to the lion's new colleagues. They gotten new clothes, furnishings, and finally proper electric and water. Last but not least, he sees little Pete actually going to school in good clothing. When he saw him, Pete waved at the friendly white lion with a huge grin on his face, he knew how to change the faith of that little kitten's face.
“Thank you,” Jerale says to him every time. If the lion had never helped little Pete in the first place, he and his family would have both been separated and broken forever.
He had changed everything he knew about himself and will continue changing the world with his charitable help. Going across his nation giving his best at helping, being sympathetic to others and offering donations to those who are not privileged enough. Even though he hasn't earn as much as before, this sort of help is a privilege for him. He sees a lot of people changing for the better good and even joined him to help others. He finally knows what true happiness finally is, and he is truly happy about it.
And that is the story of the white lion who saved a young kitten named Pete from poverty and changing his family for a better life and continuing on to help other. His name is DiggerGallin.
