This is an example of a few things:
1. My rule that you shouldn't cover a song unless you're confident you can improve the original, being broken for the sixth time (out of six). The original is amazing, like almost everything by the Delgados.
2. Only getting a song's themes by singing it several times. Like Emily Haines' 'Winning' (gambling), or Laura Veirs' 'Nightingale' (living through war), I didn't twig until the fourth take that it was about going out and getting smashed to escape a lonely life.
3. My moth-to-a-flame attraction to female songwriters with vocal ranges totally unlike mine.
4. Partly in response to points 2 and 3, a forlorn Moult in a dress. I would ask you to indulge me and not read too much into it. I am crossdress-curious, but I haven't yet worked out how seriously.
5. Considerable self-restraint from using autotune on my wayward voice. Do I get away with it? Is the one part where I gave in and fixed myself obvious?

Thanks!
For this one, I started by laying down the basic chords from end to end and singing vocals to that. Then I played around with instruments and production on the chorus until the sound seemed to gel. After that it's an iterative process of recording, mixing, rerecording and remixing as I home in on what I had in mind/what works and pare away what isn't/doesn't; usually over several nights, mixing down at the end of each and listening with fresh ears (and taking notes) the next day.
It's also a process of lots and lots of takes. Sometimes to layer up sounds; more often because I generally can't go more than eight bars without screwing up :)
Kit-wise, a POD is a boon: I can record my raw guitar tone (while listening to an effected one) via USB, and then fiddle around with amps and effects in the plugin to my heart's content. And BFD2 deals very well with drums. But all the arrangement, mixing and programming happens in Buzz, a freeware tracker app; really not meant for this sort of thing, but it's what I'm used to.
See, it's dangerous to ask me about recording.

I've always had a hard time getting into the Delgados, but I love this song, and so this made me sit up and listen really closely.
You've got a good voice - calling it BBCish makes me laugh but it's more than a little true, and it really lends a lot of charm to the tune. Lovely stuff.
