It's a long process. Make sure to use photographs for reference of fur and anatomy.
This process uses art programs such as Photoshop.
Step 1 = Block color and shading. Starting with darker colors than the fur, and working to light. This is just a vague painty base to get everything looking right, and serves as the undercoat.
Step 2 = Refining the color and shading. Take time to get this right, because it will make the other steps much easier.
Step 3 = Paying close attention to fur direction (look at photographs to make sure you're doing it right.) start drawing the hairs over your base. Dark to light. Normally I tell people they should learn by drawing each hair individually by hand, because until you know what you're doing with direction, length, and shading, fur brushes won't work properly for you.
Step 4 = Refine the fur and add final touches.
I plan to do a video tutorial on this at some point. Haven't gotten around to it yet.
